Ruapehu volcano is the southernmost of the large active volcanoes of the North Island.
Ruapehu is located at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ), a spreading segment of the Earth’s crust and the source of spectacularly explosive eruptions over the last 2 million years.
Ruapehu’s third major ash eruption of this episode began in the early morning of 17 June 1996 when a strong southerly wind carried the ash in a narrow plume northwards across Rotorua.

Mr Ryan, who has served the Ruapehu District for 17 years, first as chief financial officer and then as chief executive, says the decision to take up the Waitomo role was probably one of the hardest decisions of his professional life.
"This is a very exciting time for the Ruapehu district with council's balance sheet being extremely sound and having invested in, or committed to invest in, key infrastructure to ensure the community is well placed to take advantage of any opportunities in the future," he says.

Excessive speed was identified as a contributing factor in 18 injury crashes (21 percent of all injury crashes) in the Ruapehu District during 2003.
The road or environmental factors most commonly reported in crashes on Ruapehu District roads were rain, ice or frost creating a slippery road surface, or where the road was undergoing maintenance or construction (roadworks).

The Southern Ruapehu Lahar Planning Group was formed to plan the response to risks posed by the lahar as it travels down the Whangaehu Valley.
Ruapehu, Wanganui, and Rangitikei District Councils have all assembled lists of key contacts in the lower Valley, and these will form the basis for warning residents further down the valley.

Results of the latest triennial revaluation reveal the total capital value of the 9399 properties within the Ruapehu district has increased by $1.63 billion since 2002 while the corresponding land value has increased by $1.21 billion.
Outlining the review results to the Ruapehu District Council’s economic development committee David Nagel, from Quotable Value (the council’s valuation service provider) said residential prices had been fuelled by demand from out of town investors as well as from Australia.
The increases were across the district but with the largest price movements being in the value of residential sections within the various townships.

MT RUAPEHU - The owner of Mt Ruapehu's Whakapapa skifield will own both of the North Island's resorts from the end of the ski season, after buying its on-mountain rival from the receiver.
Ruapehu Alpine Lifts announced yesterday that it had bought Turoa Ski Resort from receiver PricewaterhouseCoopers and would operate both fields jointly from November 1, subject to Commerce Commission approval.
The acquisition was "superb news" for skiers and the Ruapehu district as his company had operated Whakapapa for nearly 50 years.

Otorohanga and Waitomo district councils were recently issued disconnection notices for failing to pay the charges, which the councils view as unreasonable.
The Waitomo district's streetlights were due to be switched off last Thursday night, but The Lines Company extended the deadline to March 31.
Repairs to Waitomo district roads are expected to cost in excess of $500,000, in the wake of recent wet weather.

The torrent of mud, ash and water - known as a lahar - would overflow from the volcano's crater lake and threaten everything in its path.
The area's regional council, horizons.mw, and the Ruapehu District Council are objecting to the Government's decision not to do engineering work at the crater rim to drain the lake before a lahar occurs.
Instead, a $300,000 early-warning alarm system has been installed and a stop-bank built at the base of the mountain to stop a lahar from going into the Tongariro River and towards the Desert Road.
