Rubén Blades (born July 16, 1948) is a Panamanian salsa singer, songwriter, actor and politician.
Blades has won numerous Grammy Awards and, while Colón has not won one to date, he did receive 11 nominations and the Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award.
Blades' political career mimics Colón's, who after running for NYC Public Advocate in 2001, entered the Bloomberg Administration as Consultant for Tourism.

WILLIE COLON/RUBEN BLADES: An Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Blades was getting some bad critics because of his similitude with Cheo Feliciano, in terms of timbre and vocal styling.
Both Colon and Blades were being underpaid (way underpaid, considering the massive sales income from that album), this marking the beginning of a schism between Blades and Fania’s president Masucci that would increase with time, resulting in both Blades and Colon’s departure from the label during the mid 80’s.
Ruben, on the other hand, was still solicited by fellow Fania All-Stars to sing lead and/or background (coro or chorus, in English) in their albums.

St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture: Ruben Blades
Blades was born in Panama City into a musical family; his father, a police detective,; played bongos, and his Cuban-born mother sang and played piano.
Blades accepted reluctantly but ran enthusiastically, writing his own campaign song and encouraging his constituents to believe that change was possible.
Blades lost his bid for the presidency, partly because of lack of campaign funds and a political machine, and partly because he had not lived in Panama for many years and was not taken seriously as a candidate by some voters.

 Willie Colon/Ruben Blades
After 1980, Blades wanted out of his contract with the exploitative Fania label, but was contractually obligated to record several more albums; these were generally toss- offs and Blades himself tells his fans to avoid them.
Almost every song is written by Blades, and he's at his best: the vivid imagery of "Plastico" (initally a comment on materialism and falseness, then evolving into a call for Latin American unity) combined with a complex, shifting arrangement served notice that a major new talent had arrived.
Blades is also in fine form, with an easygoing sense of fun that takes some of the bleakness out of songs like "Decisiones" and "Cuentas Del Alma." The bad news is that the tunes stretch out for minute after minute, long after everyone's run of new things to say.

 Escenas by Ruben Blades CD
Opening ESCENAS on an introspective note is "Cuentas Del Alma," a moving portrayal of a mother's fear of the dark and endless pining for her departed husband.
To the sound of synth-wails and a salsa-inflected pop beat, Blades intones with dreadful finality the words, "heart dues can never be paid in full." The dirge-like "Tierra Dura" captures the dry, desperate famine of mid-'80s Ethiopia in both lyric and tone, with slowly-passing images of unforgiving deserts and a mournful melody.
Moving into funkier territory, "Sorpresas" is the tough sequel to Blades' revered "Pedro Navaja" with its clever tale of thieves, deception, and the barrio night.
