RUBIDIUM - LoveToKnow Article on RUBIDIUM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Rubidium hydroxide, RbOH, is a colorless solid which is formed by the action of rubidium on water, or by the addition of baryta water to a solution of rubidium sulphate.
Rubidium chloride, RbCI, is formed on burning rubidium in chlorine, or on dissolving the hydroxide in aqueous hydrochloric acid.
Rubidium nitrate, RbNO,, obtained by the action of nitric acid on the carbonate, crystallizes in needles or prisms and when strongly heated is transformed into a mixture of nitrite and oxide.

Potassium nitrate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The liquid containing various nitrates was then converted with wood ashes to potassium nitrates, crystallized and refined for use in gunpowder.
One of the most useful applications of potassium nitrate is in the production of nitric acid, by adding concentrated sulfuric acid to an aqueous solution of potassium nitrate, yielding nitric acid and potassium sulfate which are separated through fractional distillation.
Potassium nitrate is also used as a fertilizer, as a model rocket propellant, and in several fireworks such as smoke bombs, in which a mixture with sugar produces a smoke cloud of 600 times their own volume.

 SAHRA - Isotopes & Hydrology
When various sources of nitrogen compounds are mixed together in surface runoff or in a body of water, the ratio of light to heavy nitrogen isotopes in the water can be used to estimate the relative contributions of the various sources.
Collection of nitrate on anion exchange resins eliminates the need to send large quantities of chilled water back to the laboratory, eliminates the need for hazardous preservatives, makes it easier to archive samples, and allows analysis of extremely low-nitrate waters.
Nitrogen isotopes are often useful in determining sources of nitrate in groundwater and surface water.

The disclosed infrared illuminant compositions include ammonium nitrate as the main oxidizer, an infrared generator such as cesium nitrate, rubidium nitrate, or mixtures thereof, and a fuel.
Although compositions comprising a combination of cesium nitrate and potassium nitrate have low concealment indexes, the significant relative contribution of the potassium ion to the visible light produced has not been previously recognized.
Accordingly, the compositions of the present invention comprise ammonium nitrate as the main oxidizer, either cesium or rubidium nitrate, or both, as the infrared generator, and a fuel.

Occurrence and production (from alkali metal) --  Encyclopædia Britannica
There are huge deposits of rock salt in various parts of the world, and sodium nitrate deposits exist in Chile and Peru.
Alkalies are strong bases that turn litmus paper from red to blue; they react with acids to yield neutral salts; and they are caustic and in concentrated form are corrosive to organic tissues.
The chemical elements that are identified as alkali metals are lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, and the extremely rare radioactive substance called francium.

An infrared producing composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said alkali metal oxidizer salts are selected from the group consisting of potassium nitrate, cesium nitrate, and rubidium nitrate.
A composition according to claim 1, wherein said oxidizer consists essentially of 70% cesium nitrate, and silicon is present in approximately 10%.
It is often preferred that at least 25% of the total composition comprises cesium nitrate, in that high levels of cesium nitrate results in the production of intense infrared radiation without significant visible light.

The thermal decomposition of carbonates and nitrates is covered in detail in section 11.
The electrical field of the cation distorts or polarises the anion, and at the decomposition temperature, a 'residual' oxide ion is attracted to the cation and the rest of the original larger anion is released as a gas or gases.
lithium nitrate is the least stable and decomposes readily on heating to form lithium oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.
