Growth of crystalline rubrene films with enhanced stability (DOI: 10.1039/b507620j)
This pronounced difference in film growth is related to the conformational change of rubrene molecules involving a loss of chirality upon crystallization and the enhanced diffusion which becomes possible at high temperature and large vapor pressure.
Accompanied DFT calculations of the molecular geometry of rubreneperoxide yielded a bending of the last aromatic ring of the tetracene-backbone by 55° due to the oxygen as shown in Fig.
A comparison of this structure with the molecular geometry and packing of rubrene in its crystal phase suggests that the oxidation of rubrene in single crystals is sterically hindered or requires a repacking.

Rubrene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rubrene is used as a sensitiser in chemoluminescence.
Crystals of rubrene and other organic semiconductors are generally grown in a modified zone furnace on a temperature gradient, by a technique known as Physical Vapor Transport.
Rubrene holds the distinction of being the highest mobility organic semiconductor, with Podzorov et al.

Organic electroluminescent elements - Patent 5601903
The organic EL element of claim 5, wherein the first organic material includes a fluorescent material, and a maximum level of a valence band of the fluorescent material is equal to or higher than a maximum level of a valence band of the organic hole transport layer.
The dopant for the organic luminous layer may be selected from Alq3, rubrene, DCM, decacyclene, NK-757, naphthacene, and DPA to have the minimum level of the conducting band lower than that of the material forming the organic luminous layer (preferably lower than that of the material forming the organic electron transport layer).
Similarly, the dopant doping the organic electron transport layer may be selected from Alq3, rubrene, DCM, decacyclene, NK-757, naphthacene, and DPA to have the maximum level of the valence band higher than that of the material forming the organic electron transport layer (preferably higher than that of the material forming the organic luminous layer).

Ultrasensitive radiation dosimeter and dosimetry system - Patent 4853548
The sample turned red (the color of rubrene) and when dissolved in benzene exhibited an absorption spectrum indistinguishable from that of rubrene, to confirm that solid rubrene endoperoxide produces rubrene on exposure to X-radiation.
Thus as an alternative to the solution a sample of solid rubrene endoperoxide may be employed in the badge and system.
OD.sub.530 of the exposed solution was found to be 0.13.+-.0.1 in a 10 cm path length absorption cell corresponding to a rubrene concentration of 1.1.+-.0.1.times.10.sup.-6 M. This exposed solution was equilibrated with air (to standarize oxygen quenching of rubrene fluorescence) and its fluorescence spectrum recorded on a spectrophotofluorimeter (Aminco-Keirs) with excitation at 500 nm.

The investigations of the self-assembly of rubrene adsorbed on metal surfaces (Au(111), Au(100), Ag(111), and Ag(100)), which were carried out within the framework of this thesis, show a surprising diversity of supramolecular structures.
The geometric shape of rubrene is characterized by a structural asymmetry leading to the existence of two mirror imaged versions of the molecule which are not superimposable to each other, such as for instance our left and right hand or the helical DNA.
The semiconducting behavior of rubrene is furthermore probed by STS measurements detecting the energetic positions of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO).

Growth of crystalline Rubrene films with enhanced stability
In the present work we demonstrate for the case of rubrene that also the molecular conformation is important because it can be different for the gas phase and the crystalline phase.
The apparent impossibility to prepare crystalline thin films of rubrene has encouraged us to unravel the differences in film growth and to overcome this obvious limitation.

APS - 2006 APS March Meeting - Event - A Systematic Study of Metal Contacts on Single Crystalline Rubrene
In organics, despite the technological importance of such interfaces, little is known about the fundamental mechanisms that govern their performance in real devices.
We have studied a series of metal contacts on rubrene single crystals and find systematic dependence of the transport barrier on the metal workfunction.
In the process of the study of metal-rubrene heterojunctions, we have realized an efficient single-crystal rubrene diode employing a hole-blocking metal contact.

It was shown previously that the vibrations passing through the inertial chemical system became phase-delayed and amplitude-attenuated in comparison with the oscillations of the RC and, besides, this delay and attenuation depend on the relation between the lifetime of intermediate stages and the oscillation frequency

Highly c-axis oriented rubrene thin films were fabricated by combinatorial molecular beam epitaxy on atomically flat α-Al (0001) substrates, the surface of which was partially modified with pentacene buffer film.
Rubrene thin films grown at room temperature on a sapphire substrate without pentacene buffer layer did not exhibit any X-ray diffraction pattern, whereas films deposited on a pentacene buffer layer exhibited peaks of c-axis orientation.
Preliminary, p-type operation was observed in bottom-gate field effect transistors using this rubrene film deposited on a pentacene buffer.

We have studied the formation of the pentacene channel and its relationship to the evolution of 2D growth of a pentacene monolayer nd proved the drain current starts to flow at a sharp threshold where the pentacene islands come into contact with each other during the initial stage of the transistor formation.
Rubrene (C42H28) is one f the prominent organic materials because of its relatively high values of the surface carrier mobility.
In comparison to pentacene, rubrene shows 3D growth of the circular islands even in the early stages of growth.

Primary photoexcitation and charge transport in molecular crystals
From the shape of these spectra and by comparing them with each other we have been able to identify several alternate photoexcitation mechanisms in rubrene that involve different kinds of vibronic and frozen lattice transitions and different kinds of excitons.
By comparing the onset of the photoconductivity and the photoluminescence we have been able to show that the creation of free charge carriers happens through a long lived intermediate state that is reached from the free exciton state.

The researchers suspect that the phenomenon arises from the unique packing of the molecules in the rubrene crystal.

ETH - PNM - Oxygen-induced traps in rubrene single crystals
In addition to measuring the in-gap density of states as described above, we have studied the influence of external conditions on the density of bulk traps.
We were able to intentionally induce additional traps in rubrene single crystals by oxygen exposure or X-ray irradiation and determine their density and energetic position within the band gap.
The energetic position of oxygen-induced trap states in rubrene single crystals was thus identified at 0.27 eV above the valence band edge, as can be seen in the figure.
