Rubrics (education) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In education, a rubric is a set of criteria and standards linked to learning objectives that is used to assess a student's performance on a paper, project, essay, etc.
Rubrics are often used in alternative assessments in education but have gained ground as a way of establishing written guidelines or standards of assessments for formal professionally administered essay tests like some of the teacher assessment exams found in the PRAXIS series.
The rubric focuses on stated objectives, which should be tied to the educational standards as established by the community, and should use a range or scale to rate the performance.

In the New Paradigm of education reform, rubrics are often used to attach authentic meaning to traditional "grades," (both letter and number).
Therefore, rubrics support education reform principles in that they help shift the focus of assessment from teaching to learning, i.e., from what was taught to what was learned.

 rubrics
A rubric is a scoring guide that describes the requirements for various levels of proficiency when students respond to a learning task, open-ended question, or stated criteria.
The purpose is to answer the question, "What are the conditions of success and to what degree are those conditions met by the student involved in the task?" Thus, a rubric enables teachers to clarify to students what is expected in a learning experience and what to do to reach higher levels of achievement.
The task and the rubric should require more sophisticated and abstract thinking that might be required of average or struggling learners.

Current Issues in Education: Volume 4 Number 4
Rubrics are currently among the most popular innovations in education (Goodrich Andrade, 2000; Goodrich, 1997a, 1997b; Jensen, 1995; Ketter, 1997; Luft, 1997; Popham, 1997), but little research on their effectiveness has been undertaken.
A rubric is usually a one- or two-page document that lists the criteria for a specific assignment and describes varying levels of quality, from excellent to poor.
Research is needed on the most effective role for rubrics in the writing process and on the effect of rubrics on the performance of female students if the promises and pitfalls of this popular approach are to be understood and applied in ways that promote learning and development.

Education and community engagement activities in America’s orchestras have grown exponentially over the past 10-15 years.
In an effort to support music education in schools, orchestras are partnering with local school systems and offering innovative programs such as residencies and after-school programs; early childhood and teen programs; continuing education programs for adults; and a host of other activities.
While none of these are capable of replacing an ongoing sequential K-12 music education, (and the League strongly supports the presence of music specialists in all of our nation’s schools), they provide an opportunity for young people to develop a lifelong relationship with music and the orchestra.
