The ancients believed rubies were capable of curing illness, reconciling lover's quarrels and used to keep warriors safe from swords and spears.
Ruby is from the family corundum and is a sister gem to sapphire.
It is rare to find a ruby completely free of inclusions, however, you do not want to see so many that the ruby is no longer transparent.

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Thundarr the Barbarian
When ABC needed to see additional artwork before making a decision, Toth wasn't available, so Jack Kirby (Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and much, much more) designed the backgrounds, complete with ruined cities, the incidental characters and everything else that went into the show's distinct look.
The producer was Ruby-Spears Productions (Heathcliff, Plastic Man) — not, as a lot of people seem to think, Hanna-Barbera, tho producers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears did work there before going into business for themselves.
The voice of Thundarr was provided by Bob Ridgely (who, like Buster Crabbe, played both Flash Gordon and Tarzan, tho Ridgely did only their voices).

DVD Verdict Review - Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?: The Complete First And Second Seasons
Once the excitement of the approval died down, Ruby and Spears realized more changes would be needed to make the series work.
Joe Ruby and Ken Spears wrote all but four of the series's two season, 25 episodes (those penned by fellow HB writer Bill Lutz) before jumping ship for rival animation studio DePatie-Freleng (Pink Panther).
Loaded with continuity flaws, cleanup errors, stilted dialogue, and uneven characterizations, writers Ruby, Spears, and Lutz were working out the kinks and establishing a format that would eventually become legendary.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Scooby-Doo
He approached Hanna-Barbera about a half-formed idea he had, sort of a cross between the old I Love a Mystery radio series, which involved a lot of travel and mystery-solving, and the 1950s TV sitcom Dobie Gillis.
Ken Spears and Joe Ruby, then working as writers for Hanna-Barbera, fleshed out Silverman's idea, focusing on four young people (one of whom, Shaggy, was strongly reminiscent of the Gillis show's Maynard G. Krebs) and a large dog, traveling around the country in a van, solving mysteries wherever they went.
Silverman added the finishing touches, making the dog the star and naming him after a nonsense phrase in Frank Sinatra's version of "Strangers in the Night" — Scooby-Doo.
