Rubyfruit Jungle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rubyfruit Jungle is the first novel (1973) by Rita Mae Brown, remarkable for its explicit lesbianism.
The novel is a bildungsroman/autobiography (some have suggested picaresque) account of Brown's youth and emergence as a lesbian author.
Some now dismiss it as "just another lesbian coming-of-age novel": they apparently do not realize that Rubyfruit Jungle was one of the first lesbian coming-of-age novels.

 SparkNotes: Rubyfruit Jungle: Context
Rubyfruit Jungle, a story of a woman who comes of age as a lesbian and aspiring artist in the mid-twentieth century, is very much a book of its time.
At heart, Rubyfruit Jungle is a book about one woman’s quest for personal fulfillment, facing the obstacles that come from being a female in a man’s world, a lesbian in a fervidly heterosexual world, a budding artist with a story to tell, and an individual who longs to be accepted for herself.
Rubyfruit Jungle is also a bildungsroman, a novel that charts a protagonist’s coming of age in society.

Letters from Camp Rehoboth - November 24, 2004 - Past Out
Rubyfruit Jungle is regarded as a prime example of a "picaresque" novel, which follows the adventures of a down-and-out protagonist who learns life’s lessons and makes good.
"Rubyfruit Jungle brought me notoriety, a ton of hate mail, numerous threats on my life including two bomb threats, increased outrage from the conservative wing of the feminist movement, and scorn from the radical dykes," she wrote in her 1997 autobiography.
But none of her subsequent works achieved the popularity of Rubyfruit Jungle, which remains one of the best-selling lesbian novels of all time.

In Rubyfruit Jungle, the heroine Molly Bolt tries to explain heterosexism, and says angrily to another woman, "You don't see ads of women kissing to get you to buy Salem cigarettes, do you?" The woman to whom she is talking laughs and says "That's funny, that's truly funny.

Sadly, Rubyfruit Jungle takes the liberationist impulse of those movements, the rejection of socially prescribed gender roles and sexualities, and ends up selling out what might seem to be its primary audience in order to garner the attention of wider audiences—adolescents, heterosexual men and women.
Rubyfruit is an evasive novel, written in the heat of the feminist and gay liberationist early 1970s, when all roles, identities, labels seemed utterly prescriptive, inherently repressive, tainted with history, indistinguishable from the patriarchy which perpetuated them.
In his analysis of Rubyfruit Jungle and other gay and lesbian novels, Jonathan Dollimore concludes that “binary oppositions are a “violent hierarchy” [Derrida] where one of the two terms forcefully governs the other.

"Rubyfruit Jungle" is a chronicle of Molly's life, told from her perspective, from the poor area of Pennsylvania to the somewhat nicer area near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to her hitchhiking to New York to become a film director.
Along the way, she learns that she's the bastard child of a woman named Ruby and some unkown, married Frenchman, and she also must contend with the societal pressures of the 1960's and 70's of marrying a man to secure your future and that wanting to be a film director is easier than becoming one.
