		Ruddigore, or The Witch's Curse, is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.
		One of his victims, as she was about to be burnt at the stake, cursed all future Baronets of Ruddigore to commit a crime every day, or perish in inconceivable agonies.
		Act II At Ruddigore Castle, Robin tries to come to grips with being a bad Baronet, a task at which he proves to be spectacularly lacking.

		The whole premise of a curse that forces one to be "naughty" is Britishly weird, and as the driving dramatic element of the plot is inadequate.
		The second act, set in the castle of Ruddigore with the ninny Ruthven assuming the role of evil baronet, is humorous at first; the effect of the spooky forbears of Ruthven stepping out of their portraits is cool for a while.
		When Ruddigore was first produced in 1887, the audience began booing and screaming "Bring back the Mikado!" After that, Gilbert and Sullivan had the good sense to trim down the play, and revivals ever since have gone along with these changes.

	Review - Ruddigore July 2004 - Summer Savoyards - Binghamton, NY
		The cast of Ruddigore is one of the stronger ones Savoyards have put together in recent years.
		But the show hardly drags (and Ruddigore certainly could), and there are no awkward or visually dissonant moments, so director Tina Opie has done her job.

	Recordings of Ruddigore
		The first complete recording, in 1924, included many of the same cast members who participated in the first revival, in 1919.
		This is the case here, as the 1987 New Sadler's Wells recording is the only one to present Sullivan's score as he wrote it, and it also restores a number of passages cut before or shortly after the first night.
		This is one of the stronger entries in the Walker series, and about as good a Ruddigore as we are likely to have on video.

		I have heard it said (within their hallowed halls, no less) that the portraits in entrance hall to the Haunted Mansion in The Magic Kingdom at DisneyWorld, Florida (they change emphasis and shape as you look at them) are in part inspired by the portraits that come to life from this operetta.

		Most performers are very good, both as actors and singers, and the best singing is done by Consentino and Kamalic, the two romantic leads (Kamalic passes the acid test of Sullivan's notoriously rapid patter songs with flying colors).
		This second act is built around a spectacular special effect (I won't give it away, but you'll know it when you see it), and is realized in a simple yet seamless manner.
		Speaking of which, Ruddigore is a bit unusual in having a second act much more serious and genuinely emotional that the first one; this production plays it mostly for laughs, which is certainly a valid choice.
