Rudolf Hoess related before his execution how he often felt weak-kneed at having to push hundreds of screaming, pleading children into the gas chambers: "I did, however, always feel ashamed of this weakness of mine after I talked to Adolf Eichmann.

 BookRags: Emil Brunner Biography
Emil Brunner (1889-1966), Swiss Reformed theologian, was a principal contributor to what came to be known popularly (though inaccurately) as "neo-orthodoxy," which was in opposition to late 19th and early 20th century "liberal" Protestant theology.
Emil Brunner was born at Winterthur, near Zurich, Switzerland, on December 23, 1889.
From 1916 to 1924 Brunner was pastor of a small congregation in the mountain village of Obstalden in the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland.

Boston Collaborative Encyclopedia of Western Theology: Rudolf Bultmann
Rudolf Bultmann is one of the most influential theologians and biblical scholars of the twentieth century.
Rudolf’s education began at the humanistic Gymnasium at Oldenburg; incidentally, he studied concurrently with the philosopher-to-be, Karl Jaspers, who was only a few grades ahead of young Bultmann.
His move—along with such theologians as Karl Barth, Emil Brunner, and Friedrich Gogarten—to dialectical theology meant that the liberal history-of-religions approach was precisely the method that Bultmann would not pursue.

 bible-modernist
To the Modernist there is no supernatural salvation to be appropriated by a definite act of saving faith as set forth in the Bible.
Some of the more famous Modernists would be Harry Emerson Fosdick, Shailer Mathews, Karl Barth, Emil Brunner, Rudolf Bultmann, Reinhold Neibuhr and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
If it should appear that certain stories of the Bible were legend rather than sober history, this would simply mean that the past expressed its religious attitude and conviction by the use of legend.

Moreso than Barth, many of his followers and contemporaries have been influenced, as was Barth, by the philosophy of existentialism and its theological implications.
Thus, theologians such as Emil Brunner, Rudolf Bultmann, and others, while not Barthians, are often, and perhaps technically in error, lumped together as neo-orthodox theologians.

Review of Kelsey's The Uses Of Scripture In Recent Theology
The more fashionable theological schools have produced, on the whole, more sophisticated studies than the orthodox, and the seminal works of Karl Barth, Emil Brunner, Rudolf Bultmann, Gerhard Ebeling, Austin Farrer, Paul Tillich, and others must be praised at least for raising important issues.
Most liberal theology, however, like most orthodox theology, merely echoes a few paradigmatic treatments; and even the leading thinkers in the academic theological mainstream have often been bogged down in the tiresome business of reconstructing the historic doctrine to make it agree with modern science and/or philosophy.
Kelsey argues that are much more numerous and diverse than generally thought.
