Paul retains the basic content of the concept of the Messiah, that the Messiah brings the time of salvation, the new age.
These facts must not be allowed to lead one to the false conclusion that Paul was not a real theologian, nor to the notion that to understand his individuality he must be regarded, instead, as a hero of piety.
Paul's person is a t issue only insofar as he is bearer of the apostolic office, and the theme of the epistle is the apostolic office.

Guardian Unlimited Books | By genre | Observer review: Uncle Rudolf by Paul Bailey
Uncle Rudolf is a desperately sad tale; a haunting narrative by a haunted man whose inability to fuse the fragments of his childhood condemns him to an unanchored existence, floating between the old world - and words - and the new.
Unable to bear the pain of confronting his past in a chronological or sequential way, Andrew uses his memoir to orbit his tragedy, darting in and out to peel off layer after layer of memory until the full horror of his history is laid bare.
Uncle Rudolf is a poised and elegant tale of how a life can be imprisoned in the darkness of the past.

 Uncle Rudolf by Paul Bailey
Rudolf is not only a sublimely gifted lyric tenor and a dashing leading man who is the object of many women's affections - but also an artist who lives in the shadow of his own unachieved potential as an opera star.
Rudolf takes the boy to London, renames him Andrew, turns all his attention and sardonic humor upon him, and gradually sculpts him into a gentleman.
Vivid, often lighthearted scenes of Andrew's worldly life with Rudolf are intertwined with the unfolding secrets of his forgotten past as Andrei, which have darkened his otherwise happy life.

One of the post-war English literary greats, Paul Bailey is esteemed for the piercing finesse of his writing.
The narrative then flashes back to Rudolf's musical education and his lucrative decision to sing commercially popular operettas, a choice that proves costly on a personal level when Rudolf regrets not pursuing a career in serious opera.
Bailey's unflinching depiction of Andrew's obsessive, nearly pathological love for his uncle is alternately moving and disturbing, and his gradual revelation of the fate of Andrew's parents adds an element of suspense to the story.

Guardian Unlimited Books | By genre | Review: Uncle Rudolf by Paul Bailey
In an exquisitely composed novel of doubleness, dubiety and prolonged protective silences, the Romanian refugee Andrei/ Andrew is condemned to cross and recross the border between identities.
There is a certain sentimentalisation of the figure of Rudolf, the aesthete, faintly camp, often betraying the odour of misogyny: but this concentrates in Rudolf a maternal tenderness that renders him a substitute not solely for Andrew's father, but, more deeply, for his mother.
That Rudolf is for Andrew the sum of all tender and desirable beauty is the tragic penalty he pays for the grace of his uncle's intervention in his destiny.
