	Rudolf Peierls - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Sir Rudolf Ernst Peierls, (June 5, 1907, Berlin – September 19, 1995, Oxford), was a German-born British physicist.
		Peierls joined the Manhattan Project in 1943, having been excluded from joining in the early years because of his German origin.
		After the war, Peierls reassumed his position in the physics department at Birmingham University where he worked until 1963 before joining the University of Oxford.

		Peierls was the leading German atom scientist who came to Britain in 1935 (becoming a naturalised British citizen in 1940) and subsequently joined the Manhattan project to develop the atomic bomb.
		By September 1948, CS Weldsmith was able to minute "I have read PEIERLS file and it seem to me to show that not only have we nothing against him but that he is a man of very good sense." Nevertheless, the investigation continued.
		There is further intercepted correspondence in KV 2/1661 (1950-1951) which also includes Peierls' request for a meeting with Fuchs, reports of meetings between Peierls and Security Service officers and a Metropolitan Police report of Peierls' meeting with Fuchs in Brixton Prison.

		I thank Rudolf Peierls for pointing out in his review of my book, John von Neumann and Norbert Wiener: From Mathematics to the Technologies of Life and Death [NYR, February 18], that he took the snapshot of the quantum theorists and apologize for not having credited him.
		In his paraphrase Peierls omits the "primarily." In another chapter I quote Walter Weisskopf describing two levels of meaning of the "scarcity principle," but Peierls's incomplete quotation of my quote recognizes only one level even though it is just the interplay of the two levels that is of interest.
		Far more important, it is disappointing that Peierls seems to be more concerned with defending the memory of John von Neumann than with the intellectual and social issues I raise.

		By March 1940, Otto Frisch and Rudolf Peierls, then Professor of Mathematical Physics at Birmingham University, had produced two brief papers which would rank amongst the most significant documents of the twentieth century.
		The first, On the Use of Uranium for a Bomb concluded that the weapon suggested by Frisch and Peierls would definitely work and that it could be made by the end of 1943.

		The report, prepared by a group codenamed the MAUD committee and set up by the British in the spring of 1940 to study the possibility of developing a nuclear weapon, maintained that a sufficiently purified critical mass of uranium-235 could fission even with fast neutrons.

	Letter Concerning Fuchs - 14 July 1944
		The other members were Rudolf Peierls and Tony Skyrme, both close associates from Birmingham University, Nicholas Kurti from Oxford, and an engineer called Kearton, who was from ICI's base at Billingham in England.
		The letter is written by James Chadwick, who was then head of the British atomic mission in the United States, to Peierls, who had by this time arrived at Los Alamos, drafted in at Oppenheimer's request to take Edward Teller's place as a group leader on implosion.
		Fuchs became an important member of the team there, and also learned an enormous amount which he was able to pass on, not only to the Soviet Union, but in the post-war McMahon Act years, to the British atomic weapons programme.

		In 1957 the US Government asked (for reasons perhaps related to the fact that his wife was Russian, and that he knew Klaus Fuchs -- who was actually a spy) that Peierls' security clearance be withdrawn, though it is unlikely that Peierls was a spy for anyone.
		Peierls returned to academia, with professorships at Oxford and the University of Washington until his retirement in 1977.
