Lucy spy ring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was run by Rudolf Roessler, a German refugee, who was ostensibly the proprieter of a small publishing firm, Vita Nova.
Roessler managed to make contact with Alexander Rado's Soviet espionage organization in Switzerland and used it to pass information to Moscow.
Alexander Foote, later author of the controversial Handbook for Spies, was one of Rado's (and Roessler's) radio operators and was one of those arrested.

Rudolf is not very clear about that point, although he admits, that the Detia people refused to give exact technical data just because the evaporation rate may differ depending on circumstances.
Rudolf assumes an exponential decay in time dependency for the quantities of HCN emitted at a given time - hence a constant rate for the evaporation process.
Hence, already by Rudolf's very own data, we see that lethal concentration, can be reached within less than 10 min - as the SS could use a high overdosis in the gassings, and did so in fact, according to the witnesses.

The New York Review of Books: SERVING THE KGB
As early as the late 1930s, Rudolf Roessler had been cultivating a cadre of young, mostly of aristocratic background officers in the Abwehr (Germany's intelligence department) who were to have unrestricted access to Hitler's top-secret plans for his invasion of the Soviet Union.
Had Stalin not initially rejected Roessler's reams of infallible intelligence on Hitler's blitzkrieg plans for the Ukraine (he distrusted and disdained spies who did not demand money) the German campaign in the early stages of the invasion could have turned out disastrously for Hitler long before Stalingrad.
Rudolf Roessler is virtually unknown in the literature of anti-Nazi espionage.

Rado's most important agent was Rudolf Roessler (code name "Lucy").
One hypothesis claims that these personalities had never existed and that R. Roessler gathered intelligence from Enigma code breaking or he was supported by the British via another agent within Rado's network, Allan Alexander Foote ("Jim").
Perhaps the British acted as Stalin's supporters to encourage him to finish the war with the lesser effort from the Western side, especially considering the Eastern Europe liberation.

Take, as another example, the proposition that Rudolf “Roessler was a witting or unwitting British double-agent and that the Lucy Ring was used by SIS and probably later the OSS to feed ULTRA material through to the Soviet Government in a form they [sic] would accept”.
While reducing a previous certainty to a probability, Bennett appears to be extending Roessler’s reach into Germany to the occupied territories, itself an interesting, novel, but unsubstantiated idea.
