Duke of Burgundy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Duchy of Burgundy, today Bourgogne, has its origin in the small portion of traditional lands of Burgundians west of river Saône which in 843 was allotted to Charles the Bald's kingdom of West Franks.
As it was their kingdom of Burgundy to France, the name Burgundy established within centuries to this border region, as the most proper lands of Burgundians lost central power and disintegrated into principalities known with other names.
In 1477, the territory of the Duchy of Burgundy is annexed by France.

When Robert died in 923, he was succeeded by his brother-in-law, Rudolph, duke of Burgundy, and not by his son Hugh, who is known in history as Hugh the Great, duke of France and Burgundy, and whose domain extended from the Loire to the frontiers of Picardy.
In the 10th century the duchy of Burgundy fell into the hands of Hugh the Great, father of Hugh- Capet, on whose death in 956 it passed to his son Otto, and, in 965, to his son Henry.
This house merged in that of Valois in 1383, by the marriage of Margaret, daughter of Louis, count of Artois, with Philip the Bold, duke of Burgundy.

 Rudolph I of Germany
Rudolph I (Rudolph of Hapsburg) (May 1, 1218 - July 15, 1291) was a German king.
The support of Albert duke of Saxe-Lauenburg, and of Louis II count palatine of the Rhine and duke of upper Bavaria, had been purchased by betrothing them to two of Rudolph's daughters; so that Ottokar II king of Bohemia, a candidate for the throne, was almost alone in his opposition.
In November 1274 it was decided by the diet at Nuremberg that all crown estates seized since the death of the emperor Frederick II must be restored, and that Ottokar of Bohemia must answer to the diet for not recognizing the new king.

Savoy (Italian Savoia, French Savoie) is a region of western Europe that emerged, along with the free communes of Switzerland, from the collapse of the Frankish Kingdom of Burgundy.
Installed by Rudolph, Duke of Burgundy and King of the Franks, officially in 1003, the House of Savoy maintained independence as counts (see County of Savoy, ca 1000 to 1416) and then dukes (see Duchy of Savoy, 1416 to 1714), until Savoia was linked with the Kingdom of Sardinia, which included Piemonte in north-western Italy.
Savoy was largely absorbed into France in 1860, as part of the political agreement with Napoleon III that brought about the unification of Italy.

 Introduction to Valois Burgundy
For the Dukes of Burgundy the magnificence of their court was of great importance in their ambitions to assert their preeminence among the courts of Europe.
While the interior arrangement of the palace are lost, the evidence provided by a series of frontispieces for books made for the Dukes of Burgundy or for individual closely associated with the court suggests a similar interior disposition to that found in France.
The Dukes of Burgundy can be said to have suffered the same disorder as their Valois relatives in France, what Brigitte Buettner has identified as "vello-mania." Like his great uncle Charles V, Philip the Good was active in the commissioning of new texts and translations.
