Topic: Rudy (film)

  Laramie Movie Scope: Rudy
Rudy does his practice team job with such gritty determination and courage he becomes a legend of sorts, respected by nearly everyone associated with the team.
These questions are answered in the film's final, dramatic scenes and during the credits at the end of the film.
The real Rudy Ruttinger, on whose life the film is based, also appears in the film as a spectator during a football game.

 Rudy Vallee @ Filmbug UK
His live appearances were usually sold out, and even if his singing could hardly be heard in those venues not yet equipt with the new electronic microphones, his screaming female fans went home happy if they had caught sight of his lips through the opening of the trademark megaphone he sang through.
His first films were made to cash in on his singing popularity, but Hollywood was pleasantly surprised to find that Vallee could act as well.
Rudy Vallee died on July 3, 1986 and was interred in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery, Westbrook, Maine.

 Filmtracks: Rudy (Jerry Goldsmith)
Jerry Goldsmith loves scoring films about adversity in sport; it's something he mastered with grace in Hoosiers, and it isn't surprising to know that Goldsmith was itching to score another Hoosiers-like film when Rudy came around seven years later.
When combined with the tender moments of character development, Rudy is a score deserving of a better film (such as the remarkable pairing of film and score for Hoosiers).
In the film, it plays an important role, but I would suspect that such an inclusion on the album would have easily disrupted Goldsmith's effort (besides, there was likely no financially legal way of doing it).

 Rudy Adrian
With musical influences ranging from the floating spacemusic of the Berlin School to the breathing thought tones of the American soundscape scene, Rudy Adrian's music is comprised of introspective layered washes of gently drifting sound accented by focused synth patterns and melodies.
The common thread to his music is the exploration of the sonic landscape, where melody and rhythm play a lesser role to the tones and textures created by synthesizers, wood flutes and the human voice.
Rudy Adrian's first release, Twilight, blended soothing ambient and slightly tribal textures, similar to Steve Roach, Robert Rich, and A Produce, and did it very well.

Rudy (Deluxe Edition) (1993): Sean Astin, Ned Betty, Charles S. Dutton - PopMatters Film Review
Like Rudy (Sean Astin), I was (am) slow, small, and not too athletic; like him, I loved football and craved the opportunity to play at the collegiate level.
Surmounting his lack of athleticism (Rudy tells Ara Parseghian, "God made certain people to be football players") and abuse from other players, he eventually proves himself as a football player.
Although Rudy may appear to be a football film or a biopic about an unknown hero, it is, more broadly, a confirmation of the American Dream, and secondarily, an illustration of Notre Dame's status as an American institution defined by whiteness, Catholicism (Touchdown Jesus), and victory.

"Rudy" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Rudy is a sleeper that is bound to be in at your local video outlet.
For a nineties-made film, the film is remarkably sex-free, with no fornication shown or even inferred among the principal characters.
Commendably, near the film's conclusion, one of its characters is even shown being rebuked and striving to break his habit of taking the Lord's name in vain.

Rudy Film Review - Time Out Film
Rudy (Astin) is an all-American dreamer: he wants to play football for Notre Dame, but, as everyone keeps telling him, 'Notre Dame is not for everyone.' The son of a steelworker, he has only a mediocre academic record, a slight build, and he's not a great natural athlete.
At 22, after four years in the steel mill, the death of his best friend moves Rudy to re-evaluate his life.
Directed with composure, but no great fervour, the film's conspicuously uninterested in American football, and much concerned with testing the limits and the resilience of the American dream.

Factual error: The film takes place in the mid-70's, yet in some practice sequences (the most glaring being a QB taking a snap face-on), the facemasks used are modern, multi-bar cage-type, and some of the players have Air helmets, not invented yet.

Rudy is the film with which I've been singularly identified -- a sort of signature role for me. A few nights ago I was in a Jamba Juice in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, and the teenagers who were working behind the counter recognized me and asked me to sign an autograph for their health teacher.

Rudy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Original Review: One of the most entertaining and popular Jerry Goldsmith scores of recent years, Rudy is a piece of music which completely captures the attention of the listener through the performance of a series of simple, attractive melodies, and a whole load of good old-fashioned sentimentality.
While the complexities of the American college football system bypassed many British viewers (the film was released straight to video in the UK), the sincere performances by Ned Beatty, Robert Prosky, Charles S. Dutton, and especially Sean Astin as Rudy himself, made it a generally entertaining, if somewhat puzzling film.
In an attempt to capture Rudy's Gaelic roots, Goldsmith opens the score with a gorgeous, lilting theme for woodwinds and then a massive orchestra and choir, which is based in part on an old Irish folk tune.
