Whilst we chatted his wife spotted a Kingfisher and we turned and watched as it disappeared at speed upriver.
A little bird flew down onto some bushes growing on the sloping dam face and stopped on the top part in the open.
We decided to go the the nightjar site nearby in daylight, and whilst driving around there I found a new track that was partly hidden by a bush and driving through it I found that it went to a hidden river and straight away I found my first Sedge warbler of the holiday.

 Birding report April 2005 Algarve Portugal
Noticing a large pool on the right of the road we turned round and were able to park opposite the pool without too much trouble.
Located in a bush at the side of the track we had good views of two Cirl Buntings and when we were having our lunch in the picnic area we saw a single Serin.
Sardinian Warblers and Yellow Wagtails were in the bushes at the sides of the pans.

We spotterd a female first, perched on top of a bush with the snow-covered Tien Shan Mountains in the background, then a beautiful male flew up to join her and began singing.
We were driving on the hard sand as it was easier than the road and we stopped several times to look at Rufus bush chat, Sykes's warbler, Southern grey shrike and Black-bellied sandgrouse.
In the bushes, we flushed Eurasian and Egyptian Nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus and aegyptiacus) and Quails (Coturnix coturnix).

This bird is one of the most cosmopolitan native birds in the Riyadh area and was present on the compound throughout the period of my stay.
A bird 'reeling' from a bush next to an accommodation block at Dywidag compound was not seen very well but was almost certainly this species.
At least 6 were present on Dywidag compound in April 93, and 8 flushed from one small bush near the escarpment at Thumamah in late-September.

Here endemic Rüppell's Black Chats allowed good views and beautiful White-cheeked Turacos, Abyssinian Black-headed Orioles and even Banded Barbets were discovered feeding in the fruiting trees and Blue Saw-wings flitted to and fro around us.
The park was rather dry and quiet this year but as we made our way through the dry bush country Singing Bush Larks were everywhere and a few Red-winged Larks and a pair of Harlequin Quail put up by the side of the road.
A few Taita Fiscals and Shelley's Rufous Sparrows obliged and some Desert and Tiny Cisticolas were found.

I was fortunate to spend an hour with him walking along the creek and finding via his ear such uncommon varieties as brown crowned chagra, yellow spotted petronia, crimson rumped waxbill, and dark capped yellow warbler.
Northern anteater chat, sooty chat, gumbaga flycatcher, and larks were added to the trip list.
The lunchbox is late, and we aren't allowed to bird the lawn as a cape buffalo is reported in the bushes along the way.

The Watamu area is not only good for plain birding, but is also internationally important for the continued survival of a significant number bird species.

Yellow Baboon, Wahlberg’s Epauletted Fruit Bat (100+ individuals seen roosting), Dwarf Mongoose, Common Genet, Bush Hyrax, Masai Giraffe, Lesser Kudu (an East African endemic), Klipspringer, Kirk’s Dikdik, Common Waterbuck, and Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest were just a few of the mammals seen in the thick bush country of Tsavo.
Mammals noted were: Spotted Hyena, Bush Hyrax, African Elephant, Common Zebra, Hippo, Common Warthog, "Masai" Giraffe, African Buffalo, Eland, Defassa Waterbuck, Coke’s Hartebeest (Kongoni), 5 species of antelopes, and countless numbers of Wildebeest.
Much of our birding was from the vans, as it is not safe (or legal) to walk around where Lions or Rhinos may be in the nearby clump of bushes or grass.

 Lesvos Trip Report
Here we hoped for Rufous Bush Chat which we had not seen at ‘Derbyshire’ during the morning excursion.
A fabulous Rufous Bush Chat presented itself at close quarters along the track within a few minutes, allowing views down to 6 feet, as it sang heartily and characteristically raising its rufous stiff tail, displaying with great enthusiasm from boulder to bush top.
We then took a brief excursion to the ‘Sheep Field’ area of the saltpans where we had 2 Rufous Bush Chats, a Little Owl and a Short-toed Lark.

The area immediately around the villa urbanisation was a dry hillside of scrubby bushes with a few pines lower down before valley bottom full of fruit groves.
The day will remain with me for a very long time with perhaps the most lasting memories of the Rufous Bush Robin displaying at the beginning of the day and the sight of a male Trumpeter Finch in full summer plumage “trumpeting” away from the top of a bush.
Our days out with him (and Malcolm Palmer) were excellent, with birds such as Rufous Bush Chat, Trumpeter Finch, Golden and Bonelli's Eagles, both bustards, both sandgrouse and an unexpected Red-footed Falcon being real trip highlights.

First stop was a site for the illusive Rufous Bush-Chat and the very localised Ortolan Bunting both of which were most obliging and gave great views.
Telegraph poles, cables and the tarmac road to the Military Zone are disappearing under the sand with the Levante wind blowing with incredible force, building a massive dune at Punta Paloma.
Four Rufous Bush Robins were also seen at several locations as were Black-eared Wheatears, Sparrowhawks and Peregrine Falcons.

Both are brown, one has more white spots on the head, rufous near the begining of the tail, same size as a Pied Bush Chat female.
They perch on a stem and dive into the grass for insects and come back to the same stem.
Seems like either the female of the stone chat or the female pied bush chat.

 UEA Trip Report
Great Knot were showing well, some with those brilliant rufous epaulets, Terek Sandpipers were abundant along with many other shorebirds, Northern Wheatear and more Hoopoe Larks, again displaying.
Rufous Bush Chat was also found in the grove.
On the track itself we found Small Skylark, Red-throated and Tawny Pipits, Quail, Sand Martin and young Barn Swallows which had fledged in the UAE just after Christmas.
