Unsurprisingly the sandgrouse didn't stop around and as it shot away again we turned to look at a flock of doves that had fluttered up form the well and was now spread along the border fence and the bushes behind.
Tommy had said that on a visit a few days before he'd seen about 20 European Turtle Doves - a species that is not supposed to breed in the UAE, but the remarkable 35 (34 more than I'd seen this year so far!) we counted seems to suggest that status needs revising.
As we scanned through them both Tommy and I came across a darker and larger dove sat amongst the flock: we both turned to each other at the same time and said, "You see that dove on the left - top of the bush behind the fence?".

Turtle Doves are similar in size and shape to a Collared Dove although they have a shorter tail, more pointed wings and a more darting agile flight.
The chequered fl and rufous upper parts are diagnostic and easily seen.
Look also for their darker underwing, the narrow white border around the tail and the fl and white collar patches like the gill slits of a dog-fish.

During lunch saw a female RED TURTLE DOVE on a telephone wire and 2 males that I assumed were vying for her affections.
According to my notes some white was seen on the base of the upperside of the tail as the bird flew away.
The best species from my perspective was a RUFOUS TURTLE DOVE that sat on an exposed perch for a long while.

There were reports of a Rufous Turtle Dove flyby but nothing concrete.
Ivan and I decided to build a crude bird feeder to hold some seeds that may attract a Hawfinch or Turtle Dove.
Rufous (Oriental) Turtle Dove was like a large ground dove but had dark reddish-brown wings and a gray head—perfect for blending into kelp.

This was a first record for North America so after returning from the dirt runway (there was no airport), the Peterson's and I careened down the rough scoria road to Zapadni Beach where it was last seen.
It was a gorgeous bird with ruby red eyes, a rosy breast and slate gray crown and nape with rufous scaling on the wings.
As the years went by, several other records of wild Rufous Turtle-Doves have occurred in the Bering Sea area, which makes me presume that this bird was also a "good" and wild bird, just a little more worn than most.

Having just relocated the snipe, my attention was distracted once again, this time by a rather dark, bulky looking turtle dove.
Over the next five minutes I grabbed a handful of images of what could only be an adult Rufous Turtle Dove (S.orientalis meena).
Close examination of the images later in the day revealed the critical pattern on the tertials and scapulars, and confirming the identification.

These Rufous Turtle Doves were photographed on a dull, grey day at the Narita-san Temple complex in the town of Narita (1 hour north of Tokyo).
Common throughout East Asia and resident in both Japan and South Korea, they belong to the nominate form orientalis, which has grey tips to the tail feathers (unlike the more western meena which has white tail tips).

The Fish Roundabout is one really big tank with probably a couple of thousand tropical marine fish as well as green turtles (Chelonia mydas), through which a moving stairway in a glass tunnel takes one from the first back to the ground floor.
The inventory has a separate listing for domesticated forms which includes the rock dove, turtle dove and budgerigar; yet domesticated forms of rock doves and turtle doves also appear under the main listing.
