NESTING ECOLOGY OF THE PLAIN CHACHALACA IN SOUTH TEXAS
Chachalacas are apparently capable of breeding during their first year, but the incidence of this occurring in wild birds remains unknown.
Delacour and Amadon (1973) provided a comprehen- sive review of the literature on the family Cracidae, but their discussion of chachalaca reproduction was based almost entirely on observations of a few nests of 2 species of Ortalis.
Social mechanisms among wild chachalacas may inhibit young males from breeding during their first year, but data are lacking.

Postcards from Sanibel and Trinidad & Tobago
Howard, who had never seen a chachalaca before, was very pleased to be the first to spot a Rufous-vented Chachalaca in a tree by the road.
There were chachalacas everywhere in the trees and bushes on the grounds and all up and down the mountainside behind the inn.
The raillery was cut off by the sight of a male Barred Antshrike and his rufous mate (who looks as mad as he).

EXOTIC BIRDING tours - Description of 2005 birding tour to Trinidad & Tobago
Others, such as Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Red-crowned Woodpecker, and Blue-backed Manakin occur on Tobago but are not found at all on Trinidad.
That's where the endemic White-tailed Sabrewing was re-discovered in 1988 and is most likely to be seen.
However, some birds such as Barred Antshrikes and Bananaquits are much more numerous on Tobago than on Tobago.

 The Dovetail Directory
Tobago has a number of species that are not found on Trinidad, including Rufous-vented Chachalaca, White-fringed Antwren, Blue-backed Manakin and Red-crowned Woodpecker.
We stay several nights at Blue Waters Inn, a lovely nature lodge located right on the Atlantic Ocean shoreline, where Blue-crowned Motmot, Rufous-vented Chachalaca and Rufous-tailed Jacamar are some of the backyard specialties.
Unforgettable dinners are served European style on their balcony under the stars (weather permitting), and several special birding locations, including Caroni Swamp for Scarlet Ibis and the Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust, will be visited.

 Blue Waters Inn
In Tobago we will seek the 13 species of birds not found in Trinidad: Red-billed Tropicbird, Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Striped Owl, White-tailed Sabrewing, Red-crowned Woodpecker, Olivaceous Woodcreeper, White-fringed Antwren, Venezuelan Flycatcher, Blue-backed Manakin, Caribbean Martin, Scrub Greenlet, Black-faced Grassquit, and Variable Seedeater.
During our visit to Tobago Newton will transport us in comfortable minivans from the Cuffie River Nature Retreat to the Tobago Main Ridge Preserve, the oldest national park in the Western Hemisphere, and to several areas where hummingbirds, chachalacas, doves, motmots, and jacamars congregate.
With our excellent local birding guide, Newton George, we'll explore Tobago from its wetlands in the southern lowlands to the heights of the Tobago Rainforest Reserve and on to Little Tobago Island, an uninhabited island wildlife sanctuary.

Other Tobago bird specialties can also be found on the grounds including Red-crowned Woodpecker, Rufous-vented Chachalaca and White-fringed Antwren.
Close by are trails leading into the forest of this quiet end of the island where you can enjoy Blue-crowned Motmots and search for the uncommon White-tailed Sabrewing.
On one of the mornings you can depart by boat for Little Tobago Island, one of the nation's most important wildlife sanctuaries.

Birdlife here is prolific and birdwatchers can add such species to their bird count as the Tobago parrot, the Rufous-vented Chachalaca known locally as the "cocrico", Magnificent Frigatebird, booby, tern, Red-billed Tropicbird, Brown Pelican, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, and Blue-crowned Motmot.

 FONT's Trindad & Tobago Tour - Sept 2004
Birds on Tobago, and not on Trinidad, include: Rufous-vented Chachalaca, White-fringed Antwren, and Scrub Greenlet (in addition to the White-tailed Sabrewing and Blue-backed Manakin already mentioned).
Also during our past tours, we've enjoyed seeing and hearing the "St. Lucia Nightjar", now thought to be a population of the Rufous Nightjar of South America.
Some birds are more readily seen on Tobago than on Trinidad, such as: Stripe-breasted Spinetail and Venezuelan Flycatcher (the latter an isolated population on Tobago).

Indeed, a common name for the Hoatzin in Venezuela is Guacharaca de Agua or "Water Chachalaca", because it seems similar to the more terrestrial and abundant Rufous-vented Chachalaca ( Ortalis ruficauda).
Below, the throat and breast are buffy white, gradually becoming rich chestnut on the thighs and the vent.
Anatomically, the Hoatzin's greatest peculiarity is its unique foregut, which is far larger than its stomach, and in which it processes great quantities of vegetable matter in the manner of a ruminant (see Food and Feeding).

The Tobago extension will provide the opportunity of visiting the pristine rainforest in the island's centre, and the offshore island of Little Tobago, where the species present include many not found on Trinidad, including Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Blue-backed Manakin, White-fringed Antwren and Venezuelan Flycatcher.
Along the shoreline, we will have the opportunity to seek out Black Skimmer, several Nearctic waders, and perhaps see Magnificent Frigatebird and Red-billed Tropicbird.

 Venezuela birding 1994
From the nearby forest we heard a Rufous-vented Chachalaca.
Only afterwards, on the basis of the descriptions in the guide of Costa Rica, we were able to identify it as juvenal male Thick-billed Euphonia in its first breeding season.
The snake moved slowly through a muddy spot where we could walk up to a few m from it.

Eventually the failure of the huge white supercilia to meet on the nape, broad bill and lack of rufous in plainer brown wings were noted.
(1 dull rufous immature bird was seen grubbing about near the start of the trail Soon a female appeared for comparison then the richly coloured male showed itself briefly)
(female over the entrance track was ID'd by rufous tail)

 Venezuela birding 1995 Southeast
The first thing in the early morning we heard from our cottage were Howler monkeys, soon followed by Little Chachalaca *.
We got up at 6, and were surprised by the view from the cottage and from the terrace where we had been dining the night before - a vast and splendid river view.
The food was delicious, and we wondered what would be the scenery around.
