A carbine is a firearm similar to, but shorter or weaker than, an ordinary rifle or musket of a given period.
The Carbine was originally a lighter, shorter weapon developed to be used by cavalry soldiers, for whom a full-length rifle was too heavy and cumbersome to be fired from horseback.
Carbines were usually less accurate and powerful than the full length rifles they were based on, due to a shorter sight plane and lower potential power of the shortened barrel.

 Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle
The Mini-14 was basically a scaled down US M-14 without the selective fire option, which Ruger did offer on their military version of the new weapon.
Ruger simplified the Garand gas system, and the little.223 cartridge worked very well in the Mini.
As a patrol rifle for rural police, a Mini-14 in the trunk or rifle rack is much better than a pistol or shotgun in many situations.

The Ruger Mini-14 rifle employs a cast, heat-treated CNC receiver and a version of the Garand's breechbolt locking system, with a short-stroke fixed-piston gas system and gas cylinder derived from the M1 Carbine.
Ruger made significant design alterations to the Mini-14 in 2004 which changed the receiver and front sight configuration.
Often these carbines carry dual serial numbers and are more desired by collectors due to their LE background.

Ruger emphasizes that the Mini-14 is not a copy of the Garand mechanisms, but it does intentionally resemble (scaled-down) the Garand-type M14 7.62mm (.308 Winchester) rifle that was the US Army's basic soldier's rifle until replaced by the.223 M16 in 1969.
As a round is fired, a small amount of gas is diverted from behind the bullet through a hole on the barrel; this gas exerts sufficient force to drive back the slide, eject the fired case, and chamber a fresh cartridge as the spring-driven bolt returns forward.
The most recent introductions in the Ruger centerfire auto line are in the P95 and P97 groups, currently consisting of four polymer-frame 9mm pistols scaled the same as the compact P93 guns and two.45 ACP Models.

The fact that from 1998 through 2001 one in five law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty was killed with an assault weapon indicates that the ban in its current form is inadequate to protect police and the public from the hazards presented by assault weapons.
