Rugians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Rugians (Latin rugii) were an East Germanic tribe whose ultimate origins have been traced to Rogaland in Norway, whose population probably was the Rugii that Jordanes mentioned as a tribe that still remained in Scandza.
Long before this mention of the Scandinavian Rugians, a group had settled at the estuaries of the Oder and the Vistula, from where they are said to have been pushed away when the Goths arrived from Scandinavia.
The Rugians remained for a while in Pomerania, where they are said to have given their name to Rügen.

Gothiscandza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They soon moved to the settlements of the Rugians (Ulmerugi, a Germanic tribe which had arrived in the area before the Goths), who lived on the coast, and they chased them away.
Immediately adjoining are the Rugians and Lemovians upon the coast of the ocean, and of these several nations the characteristics are a round shield, a short sword and kingly government.
The most salient component of Scandinavian influence in the 1st century AD is the introduction of Scandinavian burial traditions such as stone circles and the stelae, showing that those who buried their dead preferred to do so according to Scandinavian traditions.

The history of the powerful Goths is interesting and amazing: interesting, because in a short time they succeded in dominating half of the European continent and demolishing the Roman Empire; amazing, because those blue-eyed, fair-complexioned, athletic, mead-drinking "barbarians" were not at all barbarous.
If Tacitus wrote that "trans Lygios" the Gothones live and near by the Ocean there are the Rugians and the Livonians, neighbors of the Courlanders, ---then it is evident that the Goths lived within Lithuanian territory.
Rugii means the Rugian people that lived in ancient times in the vicinity of Riga.

 The Battle of Syria,
On their left were the federate Rugians deployed in a deep column some 16 ranks deep; as at the previous battles these fearsome warriors clamoured to be let at the enemy to prove their valour.
These opening moves on the north side of the plain were to set the tone for the whole battle with the commanders concentrating their efforts, as originally planned, into their troops in this sector, attempting to break their opponents armies from north to south.
The collapse of the Goths was to save the Rugians; for although they fought like men possessed the legiones were more than a match for them hewing them down by the score, and punching a hole in the middle of their line.

Anctil Ancestral Archive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
This scenario is logical considering the etymological theory that the Holmrugii [Rugians] are related in name to the land of their (supposed) confederate origin: Rogaland, which is a southwestern province in Norway whose western natural border is the Atlantic Ocean.
the Asketill were of the Goth barbarian confederacy which may or may not have absorbed the Rugians at some point in their travels and joined with the Ostrogoth faction in 487 CE after the Goth confederacy had split.
This theory is not likely as the Goths originated in southern Sweden (the Goths moved from Goten or Götland in Sweden around 150 BCE to reach the Vistula River) and border contact between the Norwegians and the Swedes was blocked by a dense forest.
