 Ghana - SOCIETY
The typical political unit was the small state under the headship of an elder from one of the seven or eight clans that composed Akan society.

Aspects of modern state penetration in Africa (1986), by Wim van Binsbergen, Filip Reijntjens & Gerti Hesseling
So-called traditional rulers or chiefs, and the encapsulated neo-traditional forms of political organisation they are heading, often form the condensation cores of such sub-national identities, to such an extent that the position of these rulers in post-independent Africa increasingly constitutes a reviving topic of empirical study today.

Representatives in institutions of the state administration are recruited from the upper levels of the aristocracy of the four majority tribes.
In African folk law, where immutability of the contract between ruler and ruled has long been supposed, because the discourse of the sanctity of ‘traditional rule’ suggested eternal validity, the rightful murder of a tyrant chief, whose tyranny breaches the basic contract between ruler and ruled, is just the most spectacular example of repudiation.
