  Jewish History of Romania
Despite the attempts of the older assimilationist and established Jewish groups, the inclination of Rumanian Jewry—thanks largely to the trends among Jews of the newly annexed provinces and to the impact of Zionism—was toward a clear-cut Jewish stance in politics.
The Rumanian population was 84.06% farmers, the Jews constituting the middle class.
The characterizing factor of the demography of Rumanian Jewry during this period was the constant decrease in the community's size.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Rumania
The modern Rumanians are generally regarded as the descendants of the Dacians, a branch of the ancient Thracians; they dwelt north of the Danube in the territory now known as Transylvania, and formed at the beginning of the Christian era a comparatively well-organized state.
In the history of the Southern Rumanians the erection of the Rumano-Bulgar Empire by the brothers, Peter, Jonita, and Asen at the end of the twelfth century is especially noteworthy; this empire became disintegrated in the middle of the thirteenth century on the extinction of the Asen dynasty (see BULGARIA).
Both these Rumanian principalities had to contend with great difficulties from their foundation: on the one hand their independence was threatened by the neighbouring kingdoms of Hungary and Poland, while on the other domestic quarrels and a want of unity between the kindred principalities lessened their strength.

 Rumanian Language
Rumanian (Limbă Română) is a Balkano-Romance language, used by some 23,500,000 speakers, of whom about 20,000,000 live in Rumania, 2,700,000 in Moldova, some 350,000 in Ukraine, and about 60,000 in Yugoslavia and 10,000 in Hungary.
Rumanian is picturesquely described either as a barbarized Latin or as a Latinized barbarian tongue.
It is not impossible that the ancestors of modern Rumanians were in the late Antiquity slaves and servants engaged in agriculture and cattle breeding for their masters, the rich Roman colonists of the fortified Balkan cities.

THE RUMANIAN POLICY AGAINST THE TRANSYLVANIAN AND MOLDAVIAN HUNGARIANS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The repressive Rumanian policy of political, legal, educational, and economic discrimination, of forced cultural assimilation, of deportation, and propaganda campaigns against the Hungarians is directly related to the official Rumanian historical version which seeks to project a distorted and falsified image of the Hungarians.
The Rumanian regime exploits the fear of the possibility of territorial revision in favour of Hungary, for which there is a historical precedent since Hungary recovered temporarily part of Transylvania as a result of the 1940 Vienna Arbitration, this threat being referred to as Hungarian ‘revanchism' and ‘revisionism’ by the Rumanian regime.
The Rumanian nationality policy therefore served to legitimize the regime in power and this policy was justified by a nationalistic official version of history which also depicted the Hungarians as a threat to Rumanian national security and territorial integrity.

On the basis of the assumption of a Thracian sound shift from IE, similar to that in Armenian, Reichenkron follows Gamillscheg's theory that the West Rumanian dialects (i.e., Dardanian and South Danubian) go with Albanian in their loan reflexes, while East Rumanian dialects go with Thracian and show sound-shifted reflexes.
Reichenkron argues repeatedly on the supposed direction of borrowing in a way that assumes that linguistic borrowing always moves from a higher sociological structure to a lower one.
