One of the most widely-read of authors of the twentieth-century, Rumer Godden was always more of a popular success than a critical one, although her skills as a storyteller have always been much admired.
Margaret Rumer (Peggie) Godden was born in Eastbourne on 10 December 1907, the second of four daughters.
Godden was never very complimentary about Chinese Puzzle, terming it “a piece of whimsy chinoiserie”, but this tale of a Pekinese, Ting Ling, who is inhabited by the 1000 year old spirit of a Chinese gentleman, was very well reviewed; her publisher Peter Davies called it “an exquisite little book”.
