Hokkaido, the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago, is the country's 'wild west'.
Colonized by the Japanese only in the last 150 years, its rolling farmland and rugged coasts offer a break from traditional Japan's overload of historic sights, and Hokkaido people are known for their resourcefulness and broad outlook on life.
It was only on our arrival in Rumoi, two hours or so up the coast, that we discovered that he had been on a local errand when he picked us up and had thus embarked on a four hour detour solely to deliver us safely to our destination!

Since I was only at Rumoi for about 9 months, I didn't keep good notes and I only remember one name and that was Jack McGee.
Background: I enlisted in the Air Force in early 1950 and after basic training, I was assigned to Kessler AFB, MS to attend Radar Operator class.
Back in Rumoi, I settled in as a radar operator and we worked 2 on a crew.

Last weekend was my last big Rumoi Festival and I’m sad there won’t be another.
Anyway, the Rumoi festival was really fun, but I only took pictures of the parade due (partially) to the mass amount of beer people kept giving me. I didn’t drink them, of course, it just took me time to pass them around to my friends (wink).
Narumi says that people are probably shorter in Hokkaido, especially Rumoi, than in bigger cities like Tokyo.
