Rumours - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rumours is a rock and roll album released by Fleetwood Mac in 1977.
Most of the songs on the album deal with personal relationships within and tangential to the group (e.g., the marriage of John McVie and Christine McVie, the relationship of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and the marriage of Mick Fleetwood and his wife, Jenny).
Rumours won a Grammy award in 1978 for Album of the Year for 1977, and spent 31 weeks at the top of the Billboard Music Charts, in spite of critical panning for perceived pandering to mainstream tastes.

The new lineup that Fleetwood Mac successfully unveiled with their eponymous 1975 album became even more successful with the multi-platinum Rumours, which was the band's most celebrated album and one of the best-selling albums of all time.
While "Rumours" can be described as an album with country-pop tunes such as "Second Hand News", "I don't want to know" and "Gold dust woman" Rumours can also be described as a folk rock album which is evident in tracks such as "Never going back again".
As you can see Rumours is a diary as each track on the album represents a diary entry from each band member offerring their own perspective of what was going on in their lives.

Rumours not only capitalized on the success of their prior album, but it was so big that it became a cultural touchstone.
What's amazing is that the rough demos and outtakes of the Rumours songs presented on the second disc don't differ much from the released versions, indicating that the songs were pretty much recorded as originally envisioned.
"Rumours" showcases why Fleetwood Mac is so spectacular and why they have it all -- the powerhouse rhythm section of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, the quirkiness of Lindsey Buckingham, the elegant musical stylings and graceful keyboard/piano playing of Christine McVie, the etherealness of Stevie Nicks.

A large consumer boycott was organised in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other Middle East countries.[3] Rumours spread via SMS and word-of-mouth.[4] The foreign ministers of seventeen Islamic countries renewed calls for the Danish government to punish those responsible for the cartoons, and to ensure that such cartoons would not be published again.
The Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League have demanded that the United Nations impose international sanctions upon Denmark[5] and that the EU introduce blasphemy laws.[6] For weeks, numerous protests against the cartoons have taken place worldwide, some of them violent.

Rolling Stone : 25) Rumours   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The sixth-best-selling album of all time owed its success to Fleetwood Mac's willingness to turn private turmoil into gleaming, melodic public art.
The band's two romantic couples -- bassist John and singer-keyboard player Christine McVie, who were married; guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks, who were not -- broke up during the protracted sessions for Rumours.
This lent a highly charged, confessional aura to such songs as Buckingham's "Go Your Own Way," Nicks' "Dreams," Christine's "Don't Stop" and the group-composed anthem to betrayal, "The Chain." The Mac's catchy exposes, produced with California-sunshine polish, touched a nerve; Rumours, a landmark Seventies pop album, ruled Billboard's album chart for thirty-one weeks.
