RUMPHI, OCTOBER 18, MANA – A 15 year old girl in Rumphi last Saturday attempted in vain to kill her aunt with a pesticide chemical, but the plan aborted courtesy by a sympathetic family member who threw away the poisoned before it was consumed.
The girl’s mother, 35 years old Christina Mwaungulu, told MANA Tuesday at Rumphi Police that the girl had put the poisonous chemical to potato leaves (Kholowa) that she prepared for her aunt whose name was not identified.
She explained in tears that fortunately, the targeted person took a little of the vegetables during lunch because of its strange look and taste therefore she was not badly affected.

As a first approximation to determine whether runoff was increasing or decreasing, water years with similar rainfall characteristics were recognized from the 1960s and the 1990s.
The results show that trends in the Rumphi and Diamphwe basins suggest a decrease in runoff and a consequent increase in vegetation growth which is inconsistent with the expected trend of increasing runoff.
In contrast, the Rumphi and Diamphwe basins in the north show a decrease in runoff and a corresponding increase in NDVI.

In the latest stricken area of Rumphi, a mountainous area in the north of Malawi, District Commissioner Rodney Simwaka said floods had destroyed 3,000 homes and over 3,000 hectares of crops at the weekend.
Rumphi depends largely on cash crops like coffee and tobacco, and grows the main staple maize as well as beans, bananas and sweet potatoes, raising fears that the floods, which followed five consecutive days of rain, would exacerbate hunger.
Lucius Chikuni, who heads a Malawi government commission to deal with disasters, told Reuters his department was rushing food and plastic tents to flooded areas, but said his workers had not yet visited Rumphi to assess the situation.

RUMPHI, OCTOBER 18, MANA – Shire Bus Lines Friday resumed its bus services from Mzuzu to Mphompha via Rumphi after 24 years since the company withdrew its services from the area.
He told traditional leaders that the company resumed the services after realizing that the area produces a lot of crops but there was no reliable transport for farmers to transport their produce to big markets.
Director of Planning and Development in the Rumphi District Assembly, Macward Themba and Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira commended the bus company for resuming its services in the area, which they said, stopped in 1982.

Rumphi police publicist, Victor Khamisi said on Sunday Cosmas Munthali, 43, is suspected to have murdered constable Nandolo who was on night duty at the police headquarters at Area 30 in Lilongwe in 1996.
Munthali is suspected to have spent the large part of his ten-year asylum in hiding at a village in Makanjira, Mangochi.

Our choice was to enter the park and hope that they had a delivery before we came back through the town on our return journey or take a 180km round trip detour back to Mzuzu where there were three filling stations and a good chance of getting diesel.
We decided on the long detour as we calculated that we would be running exceedingly low on diesel long before we retuned to Rumphi from the park and if they hadn’t received their delivery we would be stranded until they did.
