Rumtek is a famous monastery, all over the world, especially among the Tibetan Buddhists, and is situated near Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.
The new monastery was completed in 1966, in four years time, the foundation stone of which was laid by the King of Sikkim.
The whole set is composed of the main shrine-temple, the monastery, a retreat centre, a monastic college (Shedra), a nuns' hostel, some stupas, a protectors shrine, other establishments for the community and other religious institutions.

Rumtek (Tibetan: རུམ་ཐེག་དགོན་པ་, Wylie: Rum-theg dGon-pa), also called the Dharmachakra Centre, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the Indian state of Sikkim near the capital Gangtok.
Originally built by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje in 1740, Rumtek served as the main seat of the Kagyu lineage in Sikkim for some time.
Rumtek is located 24 km from Gangtok, the capital of the Sikkim, at an altitude of about 1500 m.

The Press Trust of India reports that the court-ordered inventory at Rumtek Monastery is underway, but that officials have not been able to obtain the key to the door of the main treasure room, in which the most sacred possessions of the Kagyu order are preserved.
The spokesman for the current administration at Rumtek Monastery told PTI that the key to the Treasure Room was in the possession of the officials of the previous administration who had been dismissed by the Kagyu Order in 1992.

This is from a Lama who stayed at the Rumtek monastery when the whole thing started in 1992.
These monks were thrown out of the monastery in the Fall 93 when Bhandari was in power, as the Cheif Minister of Sikkim.
At that time I was living in Rumtek monastery, and was also forced to leave.
