"Runaway Bride" is a blender drink of a film: Gere and Roberts give it kick; Marshall, not a very subtle director, stirs it to a froth; and the quirky supporting cast - Paul Dooley, Joan Cusack and Laurie Metcalfe - are like those little umbrellas that poke you in the eye.
Roberts is a bride in tennis shoes, the better to run away from the men she leaves at the altar.
But Roberts, haughty in "Notting Hill," is defensive here and it is an interesting departure as her charm is shown to be the protective coloration of someone with a need to please and a fear of commitment.
