Runcorn is not mentioned in the Domesday Book but was a dependent manor of Halton which was the fourth largest manor in Cheshire with 38 people recorded (giving a total population of about 200 allowing for their families).
Runcorn's reputation as a port was greatly enhanced and a report of the directors of the St. Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway in 1832 refers to the "rapid increase of coasting traffic in Runcorn which has nearly doubled within the last three years".
In 1961 Runcorn's population was 26,035; in 1967 - 27,480.

 Runcorn, S.K. (1922-1995): World of Earth Science
As Runcorn related to contributor Linda Wasmer Smith in a letter, "My interest in science as a child was certainly stimulated… by excellent maths and physics teaching in my grammar school." In 1941, Runcorn began studies at Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University.
During this period, Runcorn was also a visiting scientist or professor at several institutions around the world, including the University of California, Los Angeles and Berkeley; Dominion Observatory, Ottawa; the California Institute of Technology; the University of Miami; the Lunar Science Institute, Houston; the University of Texas, Galveston; and the University of Queensland, Australia.
In addition, Runcorn was elected a fellow or member of such respected associations as the British Royal Society, the American Physical Society, the European Geophysical Society, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Science, the Indian National Science Academy, the Royal Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Pontifical Academy of Science, and Academia Europaea.

By 1950, the theory had been disproved not only by the "mine experiment", in which Runcorn was helped by A.C. Benson, D.H. Griffiths, A.F. Moore, J. Pickering and others, but also by the results of a delicate laboratory experiment conducted by Blackett himself, requiring the design and construction by him of a very sensitive magnetometer.
In 1950 Runcorn returned to Cambridge, where he spent the next six years as Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Geodesy and Geophysics.
His own personal research was crucially influenced in 1951 by new results on polarity reversals of the Earth's magnetic field that were emerging from studies of the magnetism of Icelandic lava flows being made at Cambridge by J.Hospers under the supervision of B.C. Browne, the head of the department.

Runcorn were founded in 1918 when football became a regular activity for the Highfield and Camden Tanneries Recreation Club.
In 1918 Runcorn became members of the auxiliary section of the Lancashire Combination and in the same season won Lancashire Junior Cup by beating Blackpool RAMC 2-0 in a replay at Anfield.
Runcorn also claimed football league scalps in the form of Notts County (1967/68), Southport (1977/78), Chester City (1987/88), and Wrexham (1988/89).

The transporter bridge connected Runcorn with Widnes on the north shore.
The construction of the Manchester Ship Canal resulted in access to Runcorn Docks having to be made by way of locks opposite the town’s waterfront, or through the Eastham Locks.
Runcorn was also a coal port, handling traffic from Lancashire and Staffordshire pits.
