Topic: The Rundown

In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

Purification Rundown, Courtesy of Churches of Scientology in England
This rundown is the first effective detoxification program designed to rid a body of all toxins, drugs and chemicals and return a person’s mental alertness, energy and enthusiasm for life.
No medical recommendations or claims are made and the rundown is not concerned with handling the body, but is concerned with removing those blocks to an individual’s spiritual betterment.
Tens of thousands of people have already done this breakthrough rundown, and the results they report are expressed as: able to think more clearly; increased mental sharpness; more control in life; increased learning rate; ability to accomplish more.

 The Rundown
Beck (The Rock, The Scorpion King, The Mummy Returns) enters club, and Arnold Schwarzenegger has a quick cameo where he tells him to "have fun." It is a symbolic passing of the torch from one generation to the next, As Schwarzenegger gets older, his role as action hero seems increasingly preposterous.
This is the typical male bonding buddy movie where the two protagonists hate each other but somehow manage to cooperate enough to survive (well, that and Beck can kick Travis' butt up and down the floor).
Scott is the mouth, and Rock is the muscle, and ten minutes after The Rundown nothing matters because it has completely exited the brain.

Purification Rundown - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Purification Rundown, known as "The Purif" within Scientology, is a program used by the Church of Scientology which, according to the church, results in detoxification, and was developed by Scientology's founder L.
Today, Scientology promotes the Purification Rundown to the public as a "detoxification" program, while it also works with allegedly non-religious but Scientology-affiliated groups such as Narconon to offer this program as a treatment for addiction and high levels of stress.
Doses of vitamins are monitored, and are adjusted during the course of the rundown.

 Filmtracks: The Rundown (Harry Gregson-Williams)
The Rundown: (Harry Gregson-Williams) One of the more successful students of Hans Zimmer to spin off into a strong career of his own, Harry Gregson-Williams gained new followers with his rousing 2003 score for the otherwise disastrous Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas.
Without the instrumentation native to the region, the music for The Rundown would probably be a simple rehash of the same old equation.
One notable exception is the "Kontiki" cue, which features catchy drums, whistle-blowing, and tinkling/banging percussion that builds a head of steam and erupts like the percussion section of a college marching band gone nuts (which isn't an unfamiliar experience for many smaller-college attendees who visit their football games).

 THE RUNDOWN - WIDESCREEN DVD
Delirious and ridiculous, exciting in spite of itself, The Rundown is the kind of adrenalized filmmaking that is, in fact, more intelligent and misanthropic than it seems.
Impossible to escape note are sequences depicting a little person being used for absurd comedy (it's funny and disturbing in equal measure) and a village full of dark-skinned labourers exploited for plot effect in the same way a similar village is misused in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Its action choreographed by Hong Kong action veteran Andy Chang and carried for long stretches by Johnson's action-figure charm and Walken's alien elocution, The Rundown is the same kind of surprise as The Transporter was a couple of years ago.

Professional wrestling star the Rock, who was such a lump of flesh in The Scorpion King, proves surprisingly light on his feet in The Rundown, demonstrating charm and humor as well as the requisite toughness.
The plot of The Rundown isn't anything special, but the script is enjoyably clever and reasonably coherent; the capable cast keeps things lively; and the movie's relaxed but sinewy pace sets it apart from the frantic floundering of recent action flicks--kudos to director Peter Berg (Very Bad Things).

The Introspection Rundown explained by Jeff Jacobson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The theory of the Introspection Rundown is that if you can find what caused the person to become introverted and psychotic then you can handle that cause and break the psychotic episode.
The first step of the rundown is "isolate the person wholly with all attendants completely muzzled (no speech)." [1] Auditing sessions are given infrequently to search for the cause of the psychotic break during this rundown, otherwise the person is isolated in complete silence.
Hubbard wrote that "This Rundown is very simple but cannot be flubbed, as that will compound the errors and cause further introspection in the pc." [1] In other words, this process if done incorrectly could actually make someone having a psychotic break get worse.

The Rundown is actually a lot of fun, mostly because The Rock, simply by standing there and being The Rock, cancels out Scott entirely.

 The Rundown
Somewhere in the midst of this mess was the trailer for the Rock/Seann William Scott buddy action-comedy The Rundown, which managed to achieve that rarest of feats—namely, the audience actually giving a shit about it.
The result is that when you're not laughing at a funny line of dialogue in the trailer, you're "Ooh!"ing at a flaming vehicle just barely missing someone, or "Ahhh!"ing at The Rock executing a slow-motion flip over a whip-cracking Bondesque villain, then pummelling him into the ground with those massive tree-trunk arms of his.
Any trailer powerful enough to dull the instinctive "fight or flight" impulse I gained from having to sit through that two-hour-long ice cream headache of a film is a miracle of modern science, let alone editing.

The Rundown tries to mine humor from his idiocy, and it all falls flat because it's illogical in no way that makes humorous sense.
It's funny enough that his father sends you (The Scorpion King, The Mummy Returns) to retrieve him from Brazil and you both have amusing encounters with monkeys in the jungle while Travis is handcuffed.
In fact, The Rundown loses a lot in that muddy middle when The Walken disappears for a long stretch and you're left alone with Scott.

'Rundown' is a body slam of a guilty good time
Now, here's a surprise: "The Rundown," the new action-movie vehicle for the former wrestling champion, The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson), is quite a bit of fun.
Berg also brings a sweeping flamboyance to the other scenes as well, he balances The Rock with a circle of likable supporting players (especially Walken) and he brings out a self-deprecating charm in his star that's nowhere to be found in "The Mummy Returns" or "The Scorpion King."
If all this makes "The Rundown" sound like a film you absolutely have to see, it absolutely isn't.

But with the movie's stars and elements, it wasn't going to be easy.
Scott brought a different kind of comedy to the table for his role as Travis, the wisecracking target of Beck's "rundown." The actor, who played the imbecilic Stifler in the "American Pie" trilogy, played this character as a confident adult, said Berg.

The Rundown | Movie Review | Entertainment Weekly
Scott's shtick (which reached a peak of mediocrity in the last ''American Pie'' installment) is hard-won and desperate, like a punch in the shoulder that's too hard to be friendly, yet too feeble to impress.
So I'm surprised and delighted to report that The Rundown is actually a lot of fun, mostly because The Rock, simply by standing there and being The Rock, cancels out Scott entirely.
Propelled by the pro wrestler's refined bone-crusher theatrics and director Peter Berg's undiluted delirium (you can practically hear the ''Very Bad Things'' helmer cackling behind the camera), this action comedy is the wildly asinine crack-up derby that ''XXX'' should have been.

The movie itself is quite imbalanced with some parts being really hilarious and some parts failing to do so (this could have been a matter of taste).
The Rundown might have benefited from a better title although it doesn’t really affect the end product.

Just when I thought Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was on a roll because of his memorable action-hero turn in The Scorpion King, the camera almost defeats him in The Rundown.

However, only one sequence in The Rundown came close to giving me the kind of action thrills I admire -- a long tumbling fall down a mountain by the two main characters.

What makes The Rundown more entertaining than other films of its genre are the wonderful performances by stars The Rock and Scott.
The Rock, who made his feature acting debut in the limited role of the Scorpion King in the sequel The Mummy Returns, eventually received top billing in the trilogy's third installment, The Scorpion King--but his performance was marred by the shoddy dialogue.
The Rundown also includes good performances by Dawson and Walken-who brings a certain credibility to the film.
