Ultimate RuneQuest Resources - The Best RuneQuest Resources on the Net!
RuneQuest is a fantasy roleplaying game in which you play fantasy-world adventurers, also called characters, helping them to live their lives.
We also call upon all Runequesters that do not have a website, to create one when possible, so that they can share their ideas with all of us if desired.

RuneQuest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RuneQuest was the original percentile die-based and skill-based rule set, which ushered in an era of Simulationist RPGs.
Runequest also eschewed the DandD system of experience points and character levels, by which a very experienced fighter might be able to withstand, say, ten times as much combat damage as a neophyte.
Runequest's "normal" Battlemagic were much less effective in scope and were tailored to adding up to 20% chance of hitting an opponent with a weapon, up to 20% chance of avoiding it or some minor healing.

 Heroquest
Runequest (for those unfamiliar with it) is one of the old-time gaming systems set in Glorantha, a very original gaming world designed by Greg Stafford, Sandy Petersen and a cast of, well, if not thousands, quite a lot of people.
Runequest characters tend to start with similar skill sets and have many generic skills which are subsumed into "everyman skills" in Hero system.
In Runequest trolls take double damage from iron weapons - AFTER armour and protective spells: this proved a little difficult to model, given that normally vulnerability is caluculated before defences: in which case, even a heavily armoured troll would probably die the first time he met someone with an iron weapon.

 The History of RuneQuest
The RuneQuest audience had begun to split between those who saw RuneQuest as a mere vehicle for discussion and exploration of the world of Glorantha, and those who saw Glorantha as one good (but not indispensable) setting for an outstanding FRP rules system.
For a short time RuneQuest was on the verge of national infamy; members of the RuneQuest discussion list and publishers of RQ sites were contacted by reporters from major newspapers, who seemed to be under the impression that RQ was some sort of exciting Internet sex cult (they were quite disappointed by the truth).
RuneQuest and the world of Glorantha, which had been joined at the hip for twenty years, were finally separated from each other as commercial entities.

 RuneQuest
RuneQuest is another of the "older" roleplaying games that my players and I remain fond of despite its' alleged death.
They also detached RuneQuest from Glorantha quite nicely, slanting rather towards a generic pseudomediaeval environment (a sort of neutral for DMs to write their own world) or the Alternate Earth packs which appeared at the same time from the original publishers, Avalon Hill.
RuneQuest was then given a break for a considerable time in favour of Traveller, and Stormbringer, but eventually the desire to run it again bubbled up and I looked around for something to run; we'd "done" Vikings and were all ex-re-enactors by this point.

Still, there are two aspects of the RuneQuest system that I do not use in my RPG designs, and damage-absorption armor is one of them.
RuneQuest 3rd edition added a host of modifiers to address environmental or circumstantial factors.
Character brittleness is especially pronounced in RuneQuest, where hit points are almost static, hits are applied to individual hit locations (each with a fraction of total hit points), and criticals and impales let you unpredictably get past armor.

Runequest is set in an earlier time of bronze weapons and armor, and heroic individuals leading bands of followers on bold adventures.
While Runequest's default world is Glorantha, the authors encourage players to use the rules for other worlds if they choose.
Over the years, I have kept Runequest at a distance, mainly because I was sure I'd love it, and I'd have to spend all kinds of money to collect the system.

RuneQuest was the first Gloranthan roleplaying game, published by Chaosium in the late 70s.
RuneQuest Slayers was, unless I am mistaken, an attempt to publish a roleplaying game using the name RuneQuest.
Runequest: Slayers was an attempt to use the Runequest name to positivly brand a new game from AH that had little to nothing to do with either Glorantha or the old Runequest system.

The confusion over RuneQuest over the years which is all documented in the mists of time, which meant that this truly legendary game became its own tragedy.
The simple reality is that a new edition of RuneQuest will not be able to challenge Dungeons and Dragons in the way that it did in the early 80s and provide innovations to the entire industry.

The joke is just that when Runequest (which used to be owned by Chaosium) was bought out by (I think) Avalon Hill, they took the system and genericised it, calling it "heroquest".

As the new RuneQuest is Open Content, there should be a great many different magic systems out very soon, in addition to those we are working on here at Mongoose.
Spells require one or more runes (all of which must be integrated in order to use), which means you are likely to have different party members specializing in different aspects of magic, even if they are using the same magic system, as runes can only be integrated by one character at a time.
With RuneQuest, things are very different, as there are already established conventions that people expect to see when they look at the new game.
