Apart from the cultural fascination of the Rungus and their traditional lifestyles, there’s an entire coastline of wonderful deserted beaches, just waiting to be explored, as well as the old port town of Kudat that for a brief period served as the state’s colonial capital.
Rungus women are excellent weavers, bead workers and embroiderers, but like most traditional societies the world over, many of them have been forced to look for employment outside the village, and their crafts are now concentrated on producing outfits for cultural events often enacted solely for tourists, or for the souvenir trade.
The Rungus are renowned for their hospitality and visitors to their kampongs are enthusiastically welcomed, but there are a few taboos that are worth remembering to make your trip there so much more meaningful: Don’t enter a longhouse until you are invited.
