Kid'n'Kaboodle Day Care ~Runny Nose in the Daycare Setting ~
The nose is lined or covered by a delicate tissue called "mucosa" which produces mucus (the sticky, slippery secretions) to protect the nose.
The allergic runny nose might also be associated with watery and itchy eyes, sneezing, asthma, rubbing of the nose and a lot of clear mucus.
The runny nose usually starts with clear mucus and then becomes whitish or greenish as the cold dries up and gets better, (as the body mounts its defenses against the virus, the white blood cells enter the mucus and give it the green color).

Runny nose or stuffy nose? Here's what to do - MayoClinic.com
No matter what the cause of your runny nose or stuffy nose, you can generally take care of the situation on your own.
A stuffy nose can be just as uncomfortable as a runny one, and often the causes are the same: a cold or the flu; allergies to dust, pollen or pet dander; or a nonallergic inflammation of your nasal blood vessels (vasomotor rhinitis).
Less often, a stuffy nose may result from a deformity in the bony partition separating your two nasal chambers (nasal septum) or a growth in your nasal passage, such as a nasal polyp.

Now a 19-year-old college student, Brooke has her dorm room decked out with an air cleaner, dust mite-proof casings on the pillows and mattresses, a stash of prescription eye drops, nose sprays, and antihistamines, and a sympathetic roommate who does the vacuuming (which kicks up the dust that triggers her allergies).
These drugs are effective for runny noses, sneezing, and itching, but can make you drowsy.

A runny nose commonly occurs in the initial stages of a cold or the flu.
Whether your runny nose is the result of a cold or an allergy, an antihistamine will dry up some of the mucus your nose produces.

 The Chronic Runny Nose
Topical decongestants (the nose drops and sprays) make the child feel better but at a terrible price: overuse of these products actually make the lining of the nose addicted to them, so that the child can't breathe well without using them.
A better treatment is salt water (saline) nose drops followed by suction....if your child is of a mind to let you, that is.
If you have a child with a runny nose for more than a couple of weeks, clear or slightly discolored, and without fever or signs of infection, then that's most likely allergic and not contagious.
