The first averages were "runs per game" (which determined the first batting champions) and "catches missed per game" to judge fielding.
And "runs per game," taking errors out of the mix, became "earned runs per game," but it was still a batting stat, not a pitching stat.
Columns included "runs scored by opponents" and "average runs per game" plus "percentage of base hits made by opponents to times at bat," or what we today would call opponents' batting average.

Baseball statistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The practice keeping of records of the achievements of the players was started in the 19th century by Henry Chadwick, who devised the predecessors of statistics like batting average, runs scored, and runs allowed based on his experience of cricket.
Traditionally, statistics like batting average for batters (the number of hits divided by the number of at bats) and earned run average (approximately the number of runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings) have governed the statistical world of baseball.
WHIP (walks+hits per inning pitched) and OOPS (opponent on-base plus slugging) are popular statistics; however, if DIPS theory is correct, a pitcher has little control over these statistics.

Base Runs, in contrast, is a technique for run estimation that actually models the run scoring environment and is accurate in a wide range of contexts.
When you divide the above estimate by number of innings pitched and divide by nine, the result is the expected runs allowed per nine innings.
In Wang’s case, the BsRA9 statistic suggests he should have allowed 3.84 runs per nine innings, a figure that is signficantly lower than the 4.49 runs he did allow.

For a few years after official adoption by both leagues, runs aided by stolen bases, hit batsmen, and wild pitches were frequently not counted as earned, and runs aided by a pitcher's own errors were often counted as earned.

Take the number of earned runs (runs scored against a pitcher that otherwise did not score because of fielding errors) and multiply by nine.
Let's say Nate Robertson has allowed 21 earned runs in 59 2/3 innings (the official scorer will let you know whether the runs are earned or unearned), which also happens to be the number of earned runs he had dispensed heading into the weekend.
Now we divide that product by the number of innings he has worked (59 2/3, or for the benefit of your calculator, 59.666) and, holy Christy Mathewson, we end up with an ERA of 3.17, which, again, is exactly what Robertson had accumulated heading into the weekend.

One theme underlies much of sabermetricians' work over the past quarter-century: a return to the idea that the most important things to count are runs and outs.
Thus, statistics are more meaningful when they closely reflect how offenses do or don't score runs and how defenses do or don't prevent runs.
Strikeouts per nine innings measures a pitcher's effectiveness in this area, and the strikeouts-to-walks ratio identifies pitchers who have great stuff and control.

It's the ability of elite starters to dramatically change the run environment of their games that makes their runs saved more valuable than average.
For pitchers, concentrating their runs saved in a few games increases their value; but for hitters it's the reverse.
Yet Pedro's runs saved are worth about 21% more in wins than the hitter's runs created, so the difference in value is much less than the 112:67 ratio implies.

My reading of the statistical evidence is that Ozzie saved 25 to 30 runs a year compared to the average defensive shortstop (compared to having Dave Kingman or Cecil Fielder play shortstop, Oz probably saved 100 or more runs per year, but that comparison would be the same as not having anyone cover the position).
