 Antenati: Ruodlieb

Although the form of this dance is known from the middle of the 19th century, older similar forms were practised.
Such a dance was described in 1050 by a monk in the knightly poem Ruodlieb, wherein similar postures and movements of the Schuhplatter are depicted.
Young men wished to impress marriageable young ladies with their dancing prowess.

Northvegr - Honor in German Literature
In the Heliand, an old Low German poem which will be discussed, the toll collector Matthew is quite content with his generous employers until he hears that Christ gives even greater rewards, whereupon he returns the gifts received from his past employers and goes into the service of Jesus.
The same incident occurs in the Ruodlieb, an eleventh-century German adventure story in Latin hexameters.
The very model of a young hero serves a distant lord for some time; but he finally leaves his service because he is not receiving his just deserts.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Latin Literature in Christianity (Sixth To Twentieth Century)
The first Ekkehard is the author of the well-known "Waltharius" which Ekkehard IV revised.
About the time when the "Waltharius" was revised, there appeared another epic poem "Ruodlieb" -- a romance in Latin hexameters by an unknown author, describing the adventurous fate of the hero -- which is unfortunately only partly extant.
The name of the poet who in 1175 composed in Latin hexameters the first "animal" epic, "Ecbasis cuius dam captivi per tropologiam", is also unknown.

Northvegr - Honor in German Literature
The fact that the secular code found little written expression during the Cluny Reform is no proof that it had ceased to dominate the thoughts and actions of the secular courts during that period.
Both the Waltharius and the Ruodlieb, for example, reveal an acceptance of worldly values.
Even though the clerics preferred to devote their parchments to the Lord's service, there was no shortage of scops and minstrels to entertain the courts with oral tales of worldly courage, success, and honor.
