Minister Andre Haermeyer and MP Theo Theophanous removed the bust of Sir Rupert Hamer and replaced it with a naked statue of former Premier Jeff Kennett depicted as a prehistoric creature.
The bust of Sir Rupert, which the MPs paraded around the building, was found by a parliamentary attendant in a dark stairwell half an hour later.
Sir Rupert, who served as Victoria's premier from 1972 to 1981, told the Herald Sun he was not bothered by the incident.

I want to add a few words to the many that have been written recently to mark the passing of Sir Rupert Hamer – a compassionate leader, thinker, businessman and man of action, man of ideas and man of his word.
He was an example for all of us of just how rich the years of the ‘third age’; can be when the mind and heart are open, when the health is good and the passion to contribute is strong.
While he was blessed with a supportive family, good health and a well-established public and media profile, his retirement from politics in 1981 freed him to take public stands on a wide variety of matters.

The Bracks Government announced today that a concert will be held later this month to honour the life of Sir Rupert Hamer.
The Arts Minister, Mary Delahunty, said the concert would be a tribute to Sir Rupert's love of the arts and his legacy in the arts, and to celebrate the re-naming of the Concert Hall after Sir Rupert.
She said Sir Rupert was an outstanding contributor to the cultural life of Victoria and it was fitting that a concert celebrating his life be held.
