As half of the duo Rupert & David, he made his recording debut at the age of 16 with the 1965 single "The Sound of Silence"; it was not a success, and so he maintained a low profile until 1971, venturing out as a solo performer with the LP Pick Up a Bone.
His breakthrough year was 1984, when he helmed Howard Jones' smash Human's Lib, as well as Tina Turner's comeback smash Private Dancer; the subsequent success of Jones' Dream into Action and the Power Station's self-titled debut confirmed Hine's status as one of the hottest producers around.
At the same time Hine also began working with Rush, producing their LP Presto as well as its 1991 follow-up Roll the Bones.
