The original Ruptured Duck was a cloth insignia depicting an eagle inside a wreath.
Well, the boys thought the eagle looked more like a duck; and, because it meant they were going home, the popular saying was, "They took off like a Ruptured Duck"...hence the nickname.
My father served in the Navy during WWII aboard the aircraft carrier Shangri-La. We have his "Ruptured Duck".

An American B-25-B Mitchell medium bomber aircraft called the "Ruptured Duck" was flown by First Lieutenant Ted W. Lawson during the famous Doolittle Raid of 18 April 1942.
The "Ruptured Duck" was the seventh plane of the sixteen total bombers in the strike force to take off from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8).
