Rurik Rostislavich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rurik ruled alone until 1199, when his rule was challenged by Roman the Great, who deposed Rurik.
After a brief stint in Chernigov, where he built the majestic Church of St. Paraskebas, Rurik, along with his kinsmen and a Cuman army, attacked and sacked Kiev in 1203, but was repelled until Roman's death in 1205.
Rurik was married to Anna of Turov; among their children was Rostislav II of Kiev.

Earthenware, household utensils, and types of buildings from the period of Rurik's foundation correspond to Scandinavian patterns.
Some Slavic historians speculate that the account of Rurik's invitation was borrowed from a hypothetical Norse saga, although all sagas talk of expions into Gardariki and never of invitations.

There are three known instances from the last decade of the 12th century when Ruthenian dukes planned to march on Lithuania but could not make up their minds to do so.

There, he celebrated the wedding of the local duke Yaropolk until spring, when "the weather warmed up, and the snow melted, and it became impossible to reach their [Lithuanian] lands." In 1193 Rurik again intended to organize a raid on Lithuania, but Duke Svyatoslav dissuaded him.
