  KENSHIN HIMURA
Rurouni Kenshin tries to live up to the image it wants to create of the samurai as a lost class in the new Meiji era, and this mission is both damaged and aided by the introduction of "evil" samurai who are too strange in manner and appearance to have really existed.
In Rurouni Kenshin, fighting itself should be a thing of the past, but as long as it is necessary to fight to maintain the new Meiji era, Kenshin, and thus by association all of Japan, can not be free of its Tokugawa period roots.
Kenshin is unable to completely let go of his past, and so it remains with him, a phantom that can spring up at any time to threaten the life he has tried to build for himself.

AAW: Rurouni Kenshin OAV: The Remembrance Review
Kenshin's character seems straightforward enough--he can cause an entire room of men to fall silent simply by picking up his sword, he keeps a stack of books in his room simply because they're good to sleep against, and kills his targets without either mercy or hatred.
Her character is perfectly suited for this series; she is appropriately compared with the iris by the innkeeper--a beautiful flower which stands out more in the rain--even a rain of blood.
Rurouni Kenshin: the Remembrance was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi and this piece alone should be sufficient to rank him as one of the greatest directors of the '90s.

The character development goes off on a tangent for the sake of rather cheesy plot development, and many of the themes established in season two are not continued in season three.

With such a heavy premise and storyline, one would think this were Ninja Scroll the TV series, but Rurouni Kenshin couldn't be further off that mark.
Almost every single one of these characters, as well as a goodly portion of others, has great characterization (and suitably tragic background), and many of the so-called bad guys are really would-be-heroes who just happen to be working for someone else.
Despite the sometimes utterly childish nature of the show, the violent action sequences (and gruesome flashbacks to Kenshin's past as Battousai), as well as reference to adult themes is not something parents would want to subject to younger children.
