Asparagales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Agapanthaceae are rather large, rhizomatous herbs that can be recognised by their rather fleshy and 2-ranked leaves and their scapose umbellate inflorescence of generally large flowers with superior ovaries.
The broad concept of Agavaceae adopted here may not seem very satisfactory, but I fear that none of the alternative solutions is much better when it comes to communication.
Relationships within Ruscaceae are poorly resolved, although major clades seem to correspond largely with tribes (see Conran and Tamura 1998) and the families that are also included here.

Articles - Agavaceae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Cordyline and Dracaena) are sometimes separated off into a separate family, Dracaenaceae, though recent research has tended to incorporate these into a larger family Ruscaceae.
Conversely, data from molecular systematics now suggest that Agavaceae should be broadened to include a number of genera previously classified elsewhere, among them Chlorogalum, Camassia and the family Anthericaceae with anything up to 22 additional genera.
The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group's APG II classification nullifies both these proposals by placing Agavaceae, along with a number of other families (including Ruscaceae) in an expanded family Asparagaceae.

Formerly known as Smilacina racemosa (L.) Desf., it has been widely accepted that the two genera be merged based on the "pattern of inflorescence growth".
It is also suggested that the proper family is now Ruscaceae.
I have not read the paper by LaFrankie proposing the change.

Convallariaceae is now Ruscaceae - UBC Botanical Garden Forums
In Plant Systematics (2002), Convallariaceae, Nolinaceae and Dracaenaceae are all included in Ruscaceae as suggested by Chase (1995,1996,2000), Rudall et al.
As stated “the monophyly of this family is supported by DNA sequences along with the lack of phytomelan in their seeds”.
{Note: it has been suggested that Ruscaceae may be sister to Asparagaceae (Chase et al.

IngentaConnect A review of the genus Semele (Ruscaceae) systematics in Madeira
The present study attempts to review the systematics of Semele (Ruscaceae) in Madeira, based on phenotypic diversity.
The variation in some vegetative (climbing shoot, second-order branches or ‘phylloclades’) and sexual (inflorescence and flowers) characters was analysed in 115 plant specimens from 30 field populations, herbaria of the Costa collection and Madeira Botanical Garden (MADJ) and certain gardens.

Hyacinthaceae have tepals with both kinds of vasculature, Urginea even having five traces in the outer whorls (see especially Chatin 1920).
Yucca moths are also found on Dasylirion and Nolina (Ruscaceae); for information on the Yucca-yucca moth association, which may be some 40 million years old, see Pellmyr et al.
