These townships existed prior to 1752 when they were a part of Philadelphia and Lancaster Counties, and were included in the new county of Berks.
On February 18, 1769, the Pennsylvania Assembly passed an act appointing three men “to settle and fix the boundary line dividing the counties of Lancaster, Cumberland and Berks, and between the counties of Berks and Northampton…” The vast additional territory to the northwest became Augusta Township, Berks County.
One of the twenty-four newer townships was a part of Chester County and was added to Berks in 1753, and the remaining twenty-three were created by subdividing some of the original twenty townships.

In 2004, A group of citizens of Oley Township, PA, concerned about the planned demolition of a neighboring historic 1850's farmstead, resolved to resist and publicize the issue until the owner and developer reversed this plan.
They have met with the township and neighbors to review screening and other issues, and have been reasonable in their approach to the project and the neighborhood.
As of October, 2005, this is being considered by the supervisors of three of the townships that comprise the Oley Valley School District.

The first lots in the new town of Cootstown (later named Kutztown) were purchased in 1785 by Adam Dietrich and Henry Schweier.

The first European settlers in Pennsylvania in 1638 were the Swedes, who lived along the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers and traded with the Indians.
After 1740, when Lancaster County was erected and encompassed lands west of the Schuylkill River, those residents in the townships of Cumru, Bethel, Brecknock, Heidelberg and Tulpehocken traveled south to the county seat in Lancaster for court matters and farmers markets.
Almost at once there were disputes along the southwestern border that split in half the townships of Caernarvon, Brecknock, Cumru, Heidelberg, Bethel and Tulpehocken, leaving one half of each still in Lancaster.

The whitewashed log wall of the back porch is a reminder that almost all log homes were whitewashed annually, a Pennsylvania Dutch practice which preserved some of these structures to the present day.
Fox died in 1973, but was survived by four children, two of whom (Ben and Elam, Jr.) still reside in Ruscombmanor Township and attend branches of the Brethren church.
Although Fox and the other Plain men of the Dunkard Community of Pricetown no longer wore their fl-brimmed hats in public in the late 1900s, their traditionally conservative 18th Century beliefs continued to be reflected in the religious and social climate of this farming community as late as the turn of the 20th Century.
