Rush (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their debut album is somewhat derivative of the British rock band Led Zeppelin, but over the first few albums their style progressed eclectically, influenced by the British progressive rock movement in particular, but maintaining a hard rock ethos at its core.
Rush felt they had taken the long-form song format as far as they could or wanted, and began to opt for shorter songs that still retained their trademark musicianship and complexity.
From that point on, their albums of the 1980s tended to incorporate more keyboards and stuck to the style that began with Permanent Waves, such that their recordings in the later 1980s and early 1990s are markedly different from their earlier work.

From that point on their albums of the 1980s tended to follow this lead, although recordings in the later 80s and 90s have sometimes been derided as boring, or mainstream.

The last Rush album which I would classify as "fantastic" was "Hold Your Fire" and was followed up well with "Presto." "Roll The Bones" had it's moments but it was an indicator that something in the band had to change, or merely revert to the past.

Rush were hugely popular at this time, but I had all but given up on them ever putting out another masterwork like "Moving Pictures" or "2112." Once again, I pull out this one occasionally and give it a spin but it's far from a favorite.
All in all, a good Rush album, but one that is so saturated in 80's pop sounds, it falls a bit short of being one of their best.
Rush seems to be content with cramming as many notes into a song as possible without thought for melody or memorability.

The best thing, hands down, about this album is the fact that Alex Lifeson was forced to play guitar solos again in the studio.

On Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head, the melodic excellence of Parachutes remains, as does the delicate soulfulness of Chris Martin's voice.
But now different styles are approached, as the band develop even further beyond their debut album (and the numerous Radiohead comparisons that dogged them at first).
With the recent release of 'X&Y', I am sure that 'A Rush of Blood To The Head' will, someday soon, be considered a worthy follow-up to the seminal 'The Bends' that preceded it by 8 years.

Canadian rockers Rush released their debut album initially in Canada in 1973 on independent label Moon Records and would be released in August of 1974 in the US on Mercury Records after the label signed the band because this album got extensive airplay on rock radio in Cleveland(Hello Cleveland as they'd say in Spinal Tap).
The lineup on this album was bass player and vocalist Geddy Lee(born Gary Lee Weinrib), guitarist Alex Lifeson(Alex Zivojinovic) and drummer John Rutsey whom were schoolmates and buddies in the Ontario, Canada suburb of Willowdale and formed the group Rush in 1970.
Today, this album has aged well but is somewhat overlooked as it was missing a key member whom will be introduced on the next album Fly by Night(see review).
