The BigScreen Cinema Guide: Reader Reviews - Rushmore
Rushmore is a finely written, superbly acted sublime comedy that just delighted me. I wonder if everyone else will feel the same, but I have no problem giving it my highest recommendation if you're looking for a smart comedy with a simple, well-told story.
This movie about a 15 year old boy who has a crush on one of the teachers that teaches at his prep school is humorous in a quirky sort of way.
The movie seems to take on an adult theme of childs play; the immaturity of a young man in love juxtaposed with the adult man in love with the same woman connotes a hilarious revelation that the difference between boys and men in the art of love is not all that huge of a gap.

Jared's Pick - Movie Reviews: Rushmore
Max schoolwork suffers further because he falls in love with a first grade teacher at Rushmore, and begins to focus all his disturbing energies on winning her hand: he befriends a steel tycoon named Herman Blume and solicits money for a massive aquarium he want to build to impress her.
After the effortless first hour, Rushmore seems to be confused in its tone for a time, torn between a wonderfully offbeat comedy and a wonderfully offbeat character study.
Rushmore has some of the most intelligent use of music I've ever seen (or heard) in a film, with obscure British Invasion tracks from the Rolling Stones, The Who and The Faces adding a vital tone to the film.

(Rushmore was filmed on the campus of Anderson's high school alma mater, St. John's School in Houston, Texas.) However, the movie is not a love story as much as it is a comedy of personalities.

 Movie Review: Rushmore
An average viewer, who goes to the movies once a month or even less frequently might face a standard specimen of any of Hollywood's standard genres (romantic comedy, action, special effects extravaganza) rarely enough that the redundancy of these films goes unnoticed.
Rushmore is an offbeat comedy, an offbeat buddy film, an offbeat romance, and an offbeat revenge story.
After all, with all the film's theatrical mise-en-scene, replete with opening and closing curtains at the beginning and the end, Rushmore is a celebration of life at its most theatrical, and as such would make a nice companion piece to Shakespeare in Love, which developed a similar theme in a vastly different manner.

I found it ironic that two of the best performances ignored by Academy voters were from comedic actors who decided to spin the wheel and get away from their usual role and do something with a more serious tone.

Rushmore Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Co-written by director Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, Rushmore is a rare comedy that manages to be both hysterically funny and poignant, sometimes at the exact same instant.
Director Anderson personally supervised the transfer and he has to be pleased with the results — a gorgeous, unblemished picture and spectacular sound, whether it is the thunder of the Who's guitars during the "you are forgiven" sequence or merely the soft rustle of wind through trees.

I won't say that "Rushmore" was a bad film, but I understand why the critics found the movie so triumphant, and I found a kind of boring.
As an all-out comedy this movie had a lot of potential, but the powers that be, and all else involved, went for the artsy side, keeping the humor subtle and dry, the dialog more intellectual, and quite frankly, at least for me, left me slightly disappointed.
A couple of scenes in the movie had me laughing out loud, namely the dinner scene where Max has a couple of drinks, as well as the ending play that Max puts on, but for the most part, the movie was mostly chuckle humor.

Rushmore - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
Max Fischer is one strange kid, and "Rushmore," the ode to teenage dementia that is his story, matches him in eccentricity.
Anderson's first film, co-written (as "Rushmore" is) with actor Owen Wilson, was the charming independent hit "Bottle Rocket." "Rushmore" is considerably more ambitious and impressive, but while it has some of its predecessor's blithe charm, it also has a protagonist it takes an act of will to care about.
But you can't have "Rushmore" without Max, and though Anderson obviously planned it this way, the kid is finally too off-putting to tolerate.
