Rusk County (E-21) is on the Sabine Uplift of the Coastal Plains between the Sabine and Angelina rivers in the Piney Woods of East Texas.
The county is bounded on the north by Gregg and Harrison counties, on the east by Shelby and Panola counties, on the south by Nacogdoches County, and on the west by Smith and Cherokee counties.
In 1890 Rusk County's farmers harvested 367,766 bushels of corn and 4,145 bales of cotton.

Rusk, the county seat and second largest city of Cherokee County, is near the geographic center of the county at the junction of U.S. highways 69 and 84, State Highway 110, and Farm roads 241, 343, 752, 768, 1248, 1857, and 2972, 120 miles southeast of Dallas.
A larger jail was built in 1855, and a brick building to house the county and district clerk's offices was constructed on the northeast corner of the square in 1859; the latter structure stood until it was razed in 1941.
Rusk reached a population of 2,750 in 1929.

Rusk County Academy was the first officially authorized school in Rusk County.
Congress at the time of the formation of Rusk County, on January 16, 1843, provided guidelines for the establishment of the school.
The "Act for the Incorporation of Rusk County Academy" provided for the school to be established at Henderson and appointed thirteen trustees, including James Smith and William B. Ochiltree.

The Real Property Lister in the Treasurer’s office maintains records of all real property ownership in the county and prints name of owner and legal description of each parcel in assessment rolls, tax rolls, to include working with assessors and clerks to balance assessment and tax rolls.
The Treasurer annually furnishes to the Department of Revenue the completed tax roll settlement sheets after assisting the local municipalities with their settlement, then makes settlement with all taxing jurisdictions in August for all taxes collected and uncollected.
They may either be picked up at the office for $10 or send a check for $13 to the Rusk County Treasurer, 311 Miner Ave E, Ste C140, Ladysmith WI 54848.

Mathew Duncan Ector, Confederate general and judge, son of Hugh Walton and Dorothy (Duncan) Ector, was born in Putnam County, Georgia, on February 28, 1822, and raised in Merryweather County.
In 1855 he became the editor of the Henderson Democrat and was elected to represent Rusk County in the Sixth Texas Legislature.
Ector County, established in 1874, was named in his honor.

Thomas Reuben Bonner (1838-1891), son of William N. and Martha Ellen (Wade) Bonner, was born in Holmes County, Mississippi, on September 11, 1838.
He was admitted to the bar in 1867 and practiced law at Rusk until September 1872, then moved to Tyler, where he entered the banking business with E. Williams.
In 1876 he was elected to the legislature from Smith County and was speaker of the House during the ensuing session.
