LWN: Russ Nelson proposes new license requirements   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Nelson does a fair job of structuring his opinions in a sensible, readable manner, which usually is an indicator of a non-bizzare person.
Nelson has made a mistake, is that when in a position which brings with it public scrunity, you are not, at least in this country, permitted to publicly declare any opinions, on a large number of subjects, which might diverge even trivially from the dominant paradigms.
Nelson is not the right person for the position, as any attention given to his other opinions probably distracts from his ability to fill the role of OSI president.

Nelson is known for stirring up controversy in his posts to Web sites such as Slashdot.org and his own weblog, and he indicated that he was unprepared to deal with the fallout from such comments as head of the OSI.

The news of Russ Nelson’s resignation from the presidency of OSI finally hit the industry press late last week, as 99 writes in a post below.
The crux of my criticism is that Nelson has shown incredibly bad judgment to air his controversial (plus poorly argued and dim-witted, in my opinion) views in public.
I did read Nelson's essays and it is clear to me that, at best, he was intentionally trying to be outrageous to gain attention.

In the companies where those folks worked, what Russ wrote would have gotten a person fired, and their response to us was "get rid of that guy".
