  County Kildare - Heritage - Russborough House
Russborough House in Blessington, is situated near the borders of counties Kildare and Wicklow.
In 1951, Russborough was purchased by Sir Alfred and Lady Beit, and used to house their magnificent collection of paintings, including Dutch, Flemish and Spanish masterpieces.
The Beit family gave Russborough to a foundation, and have opened the house to the public while they live in one of the wings of the house itself.

Heartened by this, the priest at Ballymore Eustace, whose parish included Russborough, waited until he had the miscreant Daly in the pews, then climbed into his pulpit and thundered against the statues.
Happily, the lavish interiors of Russborough escaped the censure of the parish, and it was these interiors that attracted Sir Alfred Beit, baronet, heir to a nineteenth-century South African diamond fortune.

Then, to cap it all, we learn of the robbery from Russborough House of 17 paintings of the Alfred Beit collection, some of the finest paintings in the world and probably the greatest private collection in the world.
Russborough was burgled in 1974 and Shergar was stolen later, and then Russborough again in 1986.
Last March there was a huge art robbery in Ardsallagh House near Fethard and there was another nasty incident in our own county where valuable thoroughbreds got loose or were allowed loose in their boxes in the nearby stud and had to be put down because of injuries.

Some might say Russborough House always had a heritage of larceny, since the property was “stolen” from Ireland by the Leeson family around 1700.
Just days after the Gainsborough and Bellotto paintings were brought back to Russborough in 2002, three men smashed a window of the house with a battering ram, went in and took away five paintings, including two by Rubens.
The Russborough has an odd knack for recovering its artworks (unlike the Gardner — which hasn’t found one of the Degas, Rembrant or Manet paintings clipped there in 1990).

Russborough was built by Cassels for the 1st Earl of Milltown between 1742 and 1755.
A central block containing the principal rooms is flanked by curved and segmented colonnades leading to two symmetrical service blocks.
The principal feature of the interiors are the rococo plaster-work and the ceilings, again by the master stuccoists Paul and Philip Lanfrachini, and ornate carved marble fireplaces, all contrasting with the austerity of the exterior.

A 26-year-old Dublin man has admitted trespassing at Russborough House and stealing two paintings worth €2.5m.
John Kearns, with an address at Corrib Road in Terenure, pleaded guilty at Wicklow Circuit Court yesterday to stealing the two paintings on 26 June 2001.
It was the fourth time that paintings were stolen from the stately house.

It is approximately 900mm in diameter and is located over the west arch entrance to the yard at Russborough House, 3km south of Blessington off the N81.
Russborough was built for Joseph Leeson, later Baron Russborough and then Earl of Milltown, by the German architect Richard Cassells between 1741 and 1751.
It consists of a central seven-bay, two-storey over a basement block which is extended on each side by curved colonnaded quadrant wings leading to seven-bay, two-storey pavilions.

The Lafranchini brothers, famous for their plaster-work, executed some of their finest work here and would work again with Cassels at Russborough.
The interiors, as at Russborough and elsewhere, were again in the rococo style, contrasting with the exterior.

The first major robbery happened in 1974, when an IRA gang, which included British heiress Dr Rose Dugdale, stole 19 paintings at a value of £8m.
Over a dozen paintings from the Beit collection were donated to the State in 1987, but neither of the works stolen today are State-owned.

Five paintings were taken from Russborough House, County Wicklow, the stately home of the late South African diamond millionaire, Sir Alfred Beit.
Two of the paintings - Jacob Van Ruisdael's The Corn Field and Rubens' Portrait of Dominican Monk - were stolen previously in 1986 and returned seven years later.

A couple, who hid oil paintings worth over €18m stolen from Russborough House in the attic of their Clondalkin home, have been jailed, one for six months and one for a year.
Thomas (48) and Noleen (46) Douglas, from Deansrath Road, who recently celebrated their silver jubilee wedding anniversary, had pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to handling stolen property on December 20, 2002.
Sgt Coyne said their total value is estimated at €18.5m, although they would fetch more if sold on the open market.
