Coutts was ranked the world No 2 behind fellow New Zealander Chris Dickson in 1990, by which time he’d scored notable wins in races like the Kouros Cup in France, the Columbus Cup in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and the Liberty Cup on New York harbour.
Coutts showed his ability as a sailor and an organiser by building the Alinghi team so quickly that in 2002-03 the Swiss team not only outclassed all opposition to win the Louis Vuitton Trophy, but then whitewashed Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup final.
Though Coutts was reviled by some because he had moved his allegiance to a foreign country and had played a large part in taking the America’s Cup from New Zealand’s shores, few could quibble with the quality of his sailing and he was named a finalist in the 2003 Halberg Awards.
