Telegraph | News | Russell Endean
Russell Endean, the South African Test cricketer who has died aged 79, played a vital role in stiffening his country's batting during the early 1950s; he was also one of the most brilliant fielders in the history of the game.
Endean's greatest hour came in the second Test at Melbourne, when he batted for seven hours in the second innings to make a chanceless 162 not out and set up South Africa's victory by 82 runs.
Endean was chosen for South Africa's tour of England in 1951 as the first-choice wicketkeeper; in the event, though, the superb performances of John Waite behind the stumps kept him out of the Test side.

If either batsman is out 'obstructing the field', any runs completed before the offence, together with any penalty extras and the penalty for a No ball or Wide are still scored, except when the offence stopped a catch being caught when only penalties are still scored.

Legendary England batsman Len Hutton swatted the ball away from his stumps and stopped Endean from catching the ball, which led to the Englishman being dismissed.
The Australian series though was free of such controversy as Endean's batting went a long way to drawing the series 2-2 which was the first time the South Africans had avoided defeat against the Aussies in eight series.

This happened to Russell Endean, Mohsin Khan, Desmond Haynes, Graham Gooch and Steve Waugh.
More controversially, Michael Vaughan was given out in Bangalore against India in 2001 when he inexplicably picked up the moving ball that was going nowhere near his stumps.

Another consequence of the loss has seen the Squadron receive a complaint from one of its Life Members, John Street, about the conduct of Russell Coutts and Brad Butterworth in their role as leaders of a syndicate competing against the Squadron’s Defender, Team New Zealand.
John Street’s complaint was based on what he perceived was Coutts and Butterworth’s “misconduct” in actively supporting and working for another syndicate whilst also being members of the Squadron.
However, not satisfied with the Committee’s determination, John Street wrote to the Squadron seeking a special meeting of the Squadron Membership “to consider the issue of membership of Russell Coutts and Brad Butterworth”.

So desperate were they for the tour that the South African Cricket Association paid for it tour out of their own pocket, the funds being forwarded by a couple of sympathetic wealthy benefactors.
By the end of the tour, Russell Endean had played one of the game’s great innings of the century; Hugh Tayfield had emerged a world-class spin bowler (a rolling spinner who floated the ball rather than turned it a lot), and McGlew scored 255 not out against New Zealand.
It was the tour that breathed belief back into the game as tight, aggressive fielding, supported by acrobatic catching, gave Cheetham’s ’Boks an edge over the more flamboyant, forceful Australians.
