 Bio for Russell Feingold
Feingold has also been a leader in the fight to stop the Department of Veterans Affairs from blocking health care marketing and outreach to veterans in Wisconsin and across the country; he was successful in passing a provision to overturn this policy that was signed into law in 2004.
Feingold opposed the war with Iraq because he understood from the start that it would direct critical resources away from the fight against the forces that attacked us September 11, 2001, and their allies.
Feingold was reelected to the Senate in 1998 and 2004.

FEINGOLD: There's already been a lot of discussion of this topic today, but I'd like to be sure I understand your opinion about whether the president, as commander in chief, can ignore or disobey an express prohibition that Congress has passed.
FEINGOLD: OK, but you said in your memo, quote, "I do not question the attorney general's absolute immunity." You did not quote it as the position of our office or, as you were just saying, this administration has argued this in the past.
FEINGOLD: But I would also argue that it is a particularly compelling time to make sure there isn't undue deference given the types of powers that the executive may seek to use in trying to fight this threat.

USNews.com: Opinion: Feingold seeks troop withdrawal
Even this June, when Feingold introduced a resolution in Senate that called on the president to clarify the mission in Iraq and lay out "a plan and timeframe for accomplishing that mission," the senator did not call for a deadline for withdrawing troops.
Feingold also said that many within his own party are afraid of demanding a withdrawal of troops from Iraq for fear of being branded unpatriotic or anti-military.
While Feingold is aware some will accuse him of playing into the hands of the insurgents and strengthening terrorism, he says the Iraq war has made America less and not more safe.

Feingold Beats Bush In Patriot Act Fight
It is the result of four years of hard work by Feingold and others who recognized that the fight to fix the Patriot Act would have to be a long-term struggle.
Some members of Congress were swayed by Feingold's constant pressure on Patriot Act issues, and by the fact that the senator was easily reelected in 2004 after a campaign in which he highlighted his opposition to the measure and his concern for the Constitution.
The only difference is that, now, Feingold's voice is part of a bipartisan chorus that is demanding that Constitutional rights be defended by the members of Congress who have sworn to uphold that document.

 Russell Feingold
During his childhood in Janesville, Wisconsin, Feingold's political views were shaped by discussions at the family dinner table and his father's early involvement in the Progressive Movement.
For Feingold, that means carrying forward the work of great Wisconsin leaders like Bob La Follette and Gaylord Nelson by supporting Wisconsin's families -- fighting for better wages and a stronger Social Security program, and striving for the best in public education and quality health care for every American.
Feingold also works to protect Wisconsin's environment by protecting our clean air, the quality of our water, and our public lands.

Feingold did not say what his amendments would propose as Congress raced to renew the act's 16 provisions set to expire March 10.
But Feingold said the new deal only makes one modest improvement over the House-Senate compromise and current law: It makes clear that there would be judicial review of "gag orders" issued with court-ordered subpoenas for information, but sets several conditions.

Senator Feingold's comments were much needed, but I really felt he ended up letting the AG off the hook in the end.
Every time Feingold asked if the President could conduct warrentless wiretaps, the AG would say that the question that he was asking was whether the President was breaking the law.
What Feingold should have done is go back to the transcripts from that hearing and reread the question to Gonzales, key on the word "warrentless." The question (I believe) was not whether the searches were legal or not, but whether they were warrentless or not.
