The name "Jack Russell" has been used for all of the several types of Russell terrier but is now most commonly used for working terriers similar in form to Parson Russell Terriers.
The Parson Russell Terrier itself was known as the Jack Russell Terrier in the United States until 2003.
She was the basis for a breeding programme to develop a terrier with high stamina for the hunt as well as the courage and formation to chase out foxes that had gone to ground, but without the aggressiveness that would result in their harming the fox, which was considered unsporting.

The Parson Russell Terrier was the first recognized variant of the Jack Russell Terrier (as the Parson Jack Russell Terrier, by the Kennel Club, 1990).
Parson Russells are a longer-legged (therefore, taller; 12-14 inches) version of the Jack Russell Terrier, although it must be pointed out that taller Jack Russell types do exist as "Jack Russells" in some working Jack Russell Terrier clubs in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Parson Russell Terriers were originally known as Jack Russell Terriers in the American Kennel Club because the name "Parson Jack Russell Terrier" had been trademarked.

Jack Russell Terriers are a type, or strain, of working terrier; they are not pure bred in the sense that they have a broad genetic make-up, a broad standard, and do not breed true to type.
Rev. Russell (1795-1883), apart from his church activities, had a passion for fox hunting and the breeding of fox hunting dogs; he is also said to be a rather flamboyant character, probably accounting for his strain of terrier's notability and the name of our terrier today.
John Russell maintained his strain of fox terriers bred strictly for working, and the terrier we know of today as the Jack Russell is much the same as the pre-1900 fox terrier.

She is a balance, narrow-bodied, square terrier with the proper amount of bone for her size.
